From the Editor......

It is with sadness that we learned of the death of Geoff Oswin. Geoff was born in Langworth. His father and grandfather were bakers in the village before him.

Geoff’s funeral will take place at St Hugh’s Church, Langworth on Wednesday 8th April at 11.00am followed by burial in Barlings Lane Cemetery.

Sincere sympathy at this very sad time is sent to Deidre, daughters Karen and Julie and their families.

Vicar’s Blog

A man, a carpenter who lived 2,000 years ago in an obscure Roman province in a town called Nazareth. At age 30, the Man hung up his carpenter's apron and began to speak publically up and down the countryside. Religious leaders were ambivalent at best. Most felt deeply threatened, because this ex-carpenter taught in huge outdoor meetings with compelling authority -- and he healed people. Not just colds and fevers, but crippled limbs and blind eyes. The religious leaders saw their orderly world spinning out of their control. And so they determined to eliminate the Man. They infiltrated his inner circle so they could grab him away from public view. And once in custody, they engineered a trial behind closed doors, and then put huge political pressure on the Roman governor to execute him immediately. Within 12 hours of his arrest, the Man hung on a cross. Six hours later he was dead -- seemingly a martyr to a glorious but hopeless cause.

But there's more. The Man did not resist his arrest and crucifixion -- in fact, he had predicted it to his followers again and again. And he taught that his death would have incredible meaning -- that he would give his life as a ransom for many. And on the cross he prayed for his crucifiers -- "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing." And he died. A Roman centurion who saw him die said, "Surely, this man was the Son of God." He died at just about three in the afternoon. By dusk he had been buried by a rich follower in a tomb hollowed out of solid rock, a tomb protected by a huge stone that rolled into place along a channel in the rock, then clunk! The tomb was secure.

A couple of days later, a group of women came to complete the burial and they found the stone rolled back and the tomb empty. An angel appeared to them saying, "He is not here, he has risen." This, too, the Man, Jesus, had foretold to his followers. Over the next 40 days, he appeared to his disciples and others, to even 500 at one time. And then he left, promising to return. His Spirit was poured out on his followers a few days later. Within a single generation his followers travelled with the amazing story. Our world has never been the same, because where people engage with the Man Jesus, they find forgiveness and freedom and meaning.

Easter Greetings to one and all! Penny

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS – Meeting of 3rd March 2015

8 Parish Councillors, County Councillor Ian Fleetwood, District Councillor Chris Darcel, 23 members of the public and Mr Phil Scrafton from Globe Consultants were at the March meeting of the Parish Council.

Mr Scrafton was in attendance to give an address about the suggested alternative route to the proposed development on Barlings Lane across the strawberry fields onto the A158.

Points noted/queried at this meeting were:

·  Some form of traffic calming would be required - i.e. chicane

·  There may be a risk of flooding to the area – Mr Scrafton stressed that the land was low risk for flooding.

·  Mr Scrafton stated that larger garages and drives were planned for the properties on the development.

·  Re foul drainage – concern expressed that drainage would be fed into the recently upgraded pumping station on Scothern Lane which was upgraded prior to the suggestion of the development.

·  Mr Scrafton stressed that the Highway Authority were not looking towards the construction of a roundabout on the A158 for ingress and egress at the site.

It was then proposed that a further extraordinary meeting of the Parish Council be held at a later date to give residents an opportunity to put their views forward.

Archer Survey – The County Highways Department are carrying out a survey/ traffic count and speed of traffic at two sections of the A158 through the village.

Gritting – LCC Highways would be asked to add Stainton, Snelland and Wickenby roads to the gritting routes for the next season with these roads being used as main bus routes for school runs.

Donations for advertising in Langworth Local – As the Langworth, Sudbrooke and Scothern LIVES First Responders has now folded, due to lack of volunteers, the Parish Council agreed that advertisers in the Langworth Local could choose to make a donation to either the Langworth Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch, the Memorial Hall or St Hugh’s Church, Langworth.

Request for contribution towards an induction loop at the Memorial Hall – This will be discussed at the April Parish Council meeting when the Chair of the Memorial Hall will explain how the loop can assist those with hearing difficulties.

The April Parish Council meeting will follow the Annual Parish Meeting

at 8.00pm.

Brief report of the Extraordinary meeting of Langworth Group Parish Council held on 18th March 2015 to discuss the proposed development on Barlings Lane, Langworth and suggested alternative route from A158

35 residents were in attendance along with 8 Parish Council members, District Councillor Chris Darcel and County Councillor Ian Fleetwood.

The Chair stressed that no formal plans had yet been submitted. She suspended Standing Orders in order to allow residents to speak during the meeting.

Points raised were as follows:-

·  Concerns of drainage, narrowness of road, traffic problems with width of agricultural vehicles currently using the Barlings Lane – the lane not being able to take any more traffic.

·  What benefits would the development bring to the village?

·  Concern that the crime rate in the village would increase.

·  Residents of main road expressed concern about the increase in traffic onto the Main Road and the additional difficulty this would create in them being able to exit onto the A158.
