Word wizards

You will use wizards to help you create a document. You will see how Word wizards provide a model for you to use for specific projects. You will open Word through the Works Task Launcher, where the wizards are available.

Start Windows

1 Turn on your computer and start Windows, if necessary.

Start Works Task Launcher

1 Click the Start button on the taskbar and point to All Programs.

2 Move the pointer into the Programs menu and click Microsoft Works Task Launcher.

Do not click on the Microsoft Works folder, the one with the arrow after it and which contains individual program files (see Figure 1).

Figure 1 Start Microsoft Works Task Launcher

The Works Task Launcher opens (see Figure 2). The window you see depends on the window that was open when you last closed Works.

3 Click the X on the Help pane on the right to close it if it opens.

Choose a task

You will make a garage sale flyer. You can use the task template and then customize it to suit your color and style preferences.

1 Click the Tasks menu at the top of the window.

The Task window opens (see Figure 3).

Figure 3 Tasks window

2 Click Newsletter & Flyers in the column on the left under Tasks, click Flyers in the column to the right and click Start this task (see Figure 3).

The Works Flyers Wizard opens (see Figure 4).

You will open a garage sale wizard that you can customize to suit you needs.

1 Click the Garage Sale flyer thumbnail in the wizard window shown in Figure 4 and click the Finish button.

A Word document opens showing the garage sale flyer you selected (see Figure 5).

The Word window is the same one, with the same menu bar and toolbars, with which you are familiar. You will use them to edit your flyer. The flyer is designed to be printed on a standard sheet of 8.5 x 11-inch paper.

Customize the flyer

The flyer has a nice layout, but the type is all in the same font, Kristen ITC, which makes it a little dull. You can pep it up by changing the type in a portion of the text.

Edit text

You must select text prior to making changes to it. You can edit (replace or delete) text, as well as make format changes (boldface, underline and changes to fonts and font sizes).

1 Double-click on the word Address in Address 1 to select it and press and hold down the Shift key. Click on or just after the 1.

The text is selected.

2 With the text selected, type your own address.

The selected text is replaced by what you type.

3 Repeat steps 1 and 2 and type your town or district to replace Address 2.

4 Repeat step 1 to select Directions Here and type directions to your sale. If you do not wish to provide directions, press the Delete key to delete the selected type and leave this space blank.

5 Repeat step 1 to select the Date Here and type a date for your sale.

Format text

Now you will use the tools on the formatting toolbar to make changes to the text. It is a good idea to use more than one typeface, but not more than two or three in a document as short as this flyer.

1 Double-click on Garage in Garage Sale and press and hold down the Shift key and click on sale.

The text is selected.

2 Click the arrow on the Font list box and click Broadway (see Figure 6).

Note: If the computer you are working on doesn’t have this font, choose another font with serifs (little feet and caps on the letters).

3 While the text is selected, click the Bold button on the formatting toolbar.

The text is now bold.

4 Click anywhere on the flyer to unselect the text and view your changes.

Replace and format text

1 Click to the left of the first character in your address and press and hold down the Shift key. Click at the end of the whole address to select all the text.

2 While the address block text is selected, click the arrow on the Font list box and move the pointer up to click Arial.

Note: The last few previously selected fonts show at the top of the font list making them easy to find it if you want to use them again on the project.

3 Follow steps 1 and 2 to select the last line, No early arrivals please!, and change the text to Engravers MT or another font.

4 Follow steps 1 and 2 to select Directions here and Date here, one at a time, and change the font in both sections to Abadi MT Condensed or another font.

Add text

1 Select Text here and type a list of items for sale. Press the Enter key after each item to create a list.

· Furniture

· Baby clothes

· Kitchen stuff

Notice that, as you type, the sentence “no early arrivals” moves down the page.

2 Select the blank lines after the last item in the list and press the Delete key (see Figure 7).

You now have more room to add items for sale.

Change font and size

Now you will adjust the size to fit in the space.

1 Select the text that describes the items for sale and click the arrow on the Font Size list box and click 24.

Note: If the change in size pushed the bottom text off the page, click in the left margin to select any blank line and press the Delete key. Repeat, if necessary, until you have made room for the text. You can also adjust the size of the font of any text in the flyer to make sure the flyer fits on one page.

Change color

1 If you included directions, to the garage sale select all the directions. If you didn’t type directions, select the items for sale.

2 Click the arrow on the Font Color button on the formatting toolbar.

The Font color box opens (see Figure 8).

Notice that the present color of the selected text has a frame around it.

3 Click a bright color.

The selected text appears in that color. Click anywhere outside the selected text to unselect the text and see the results of your choice. If you don’t like the color you chose, select the text again and click other colors until you find one you like.

Note: The colored parts of the flyer will print in color only if you have a color printer.

Save the flyer

1 Insert the student disk into the 3.5-inch drive on your computer if it is not already there if you wish to save the file on a floppy disk.

2 Click the Save button on the toolbar.

The Save As dialog box opens.
