Important Information for Families

The district is moving to exclusively publishing report cards online before the end of this school year. Some schools piloted this for the first term, and we will be publishing (vs printing) report cards for term 2. While we will publish report cards for all grades, we will also print report cards for grade 12 students and distribute these as per our usual practice.

In February, students in grades 8-10 completed their course selection for next school year with their counsellors using the Student/Family Portal, and so are familiar with it. The Student/Family Portal is the system we will be using for all course planning and reporting for the foreseeable future in Vancouver. It is a system meant to be accessible by both parents and students. The primary purpose of the portal will be for families to view student attendance data and end of term report cards. In addition, some teachers may make marks available throughout the term, but teachers may choose other methods to communicate student learning. Please be advised that any grades you see currently posted are teachers’ works in progress and are subject to change. Term 2 report cards will be uploaded to the portal by the end of the school day on April 5th.

Attached to this bulletin are a series of 5 instructional documents.

1. First Time Logging In (also translated in Chinese)

2. Switching to Desktop View from Mobile Device

3. Resetting a Password or Enabling a Disabled Account

4. Accessing the default email for password reset—if you did not change the default email, this is how

you access it

5. Student Family Portal Tour

Logging into the system for the first time (grade 11&12 students)

If you and your child are logging into the system for the first time, follow the instructions in the “First Time Logging in” attachment. Use your child’s student number as the ID and the password is Wales$2016 (case sensitive). The system will then prompt you to change the default password. You have the option to change the primary email to whichever one will be most convenient. If you forget your password in the future, the “I forgot my password” feature will send new passwords to your primary email. If you are using a mobile device to log in, you must switch to the desktop site (see instructional document “Switching to Desktop View from a Mobile Device”).

Logging into the system for the second time (grade 8-10 students)

If your child has already logged in with their counsellor (this will be true for most grade 8-10 students), they will have reset the password already. Most will have reset it to Wales$2017.

This is what we suggested students change their password to for the time being. I anticipate that a few students will have chosen a different password, however, and won’t have used Wales$2017. If they forgot their password, please use the “I Forgot My Password” feature. The new password will be sent to the default email (see the instruction guide for how to access the default email), unless your child changed the primary email as well. If your child also changed the primary email, then you’ll need to access that email in order to retrieve the new password generated by the “I Forgot My Password” feature.

Once you have logged into the Student Family Portal, immediately to the left of the Log Off button, there’s a drop-down menu where you can set preferences. Use this to change your primary email and/or your password should you wish. This is outlined in more detail (with pictures) in the “Student Family Portal Tour” instruction guide.

I will be available Friday, March 31st at lunch in computer lab C104 in case any student is having trouble logging in.

This is our first year using the Student/Family Portal, and there will undoubtedly be some challenges. Thank you for your patience and time as we introduce this system.

Kind regards,
