How to Make Sit-Upons
Sit-Upons are a long-running Scout tradition! Like bleacher seats that you use at a stadium, these are seat cushions that you can use or take anywhere, wipe down, and use again. This is just one pattern for Sit-Upons. If you search the Internet, you will find many more!
You will need:
Hole punch
Scissors
Yarn
Tubes of puffy paint
Yardstick or measuring tape
Stickers (Hobby Lobby has Girl Scout stickers and girl-friendly patterns to pick from)
Clear thick packaging tape or clear sticker page
Waterproof material (a vinyl shower curtain or table cloth will work; green, brown, or blue fabric is popular since they are Girl Scout colors)
1” – 2” thick foam cushion, 12” wide x 12” long (Available at JoAnn Fabrics in pre-cut squares, or at Hancock Fabrics in long sheets)
Step 1:
Lay the waterproof material on a flat surface. Use the yardstick and scissors to cut long rectangles at least 14” wide and 26” long.
Step 2:
Fold each rectangle in half so that it forms a square. Use the hole punch to create holes on three sides of the square. Do not create holes on the folded side. The punched holes should go through both layers of fabric and match up evenly, 1” apart, 1” in from the edge.
Step 3:
Place the 12” x 12” foam cushion inside the folded fabric square. Tie a long piece of yarn at the edge of one corner, starting at the folded fabric. Weave the yarn over and under through each hole to “sew” the sides of the fabric square together. Tie the piece of yarn into a soft but firm knot at the end of each side of the square.

Step 4:
Once all three sides have been sewn closed with yarn, lay the square flat, with the folded side at the bottom, nearest yourself. The opposite side is the top, the folded side is the bottom. Select two holes along the top side and tie a 6”-8” piece of yarn between the two holes to create a handle for carrying and hanging your sit-upon.

Step 5:
Decorate your sit-upon on one side with stickers, puffy paint, etc. One popular way to decorate sit-upons is with the Girl Scout’s first name, troop number, and camp nickname. Cover decorations with clear packaging tape or clear sticker pages to preserve them.
These Sit-Upons are safe to get wet, wipe down with water and hang dry. They would not survive a trip through the washing machine and dryer, however!
