Dear Athletic Directors and Boys’ Tennis Coaches:

I know that we are in the depths of winter right now, but we need to be thinking about the boys spring state tennis tournament for a few minutes.

The State tennis committee is comprised of myself, Hank Harris at Episcopal High in Alexandria; Michael Duquette from Norfolk Academy in Norfolk; and Scott Winston at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg.

The VISSA will sponsor two eight-team tournaments starting on Tuesday, May 12 with the higher seeds hosting. We are going to play the semi-finals on Friday, May 15 at Collegiate School in Richmond for division I and II. The division II semis will be played at 12 noon and the division I semifinals will be played at 4pm The finals will be played on Saturday, May 16 for DI and DII at the Collegiate School as well with both divisions starting the finals at 11:00am. All matches will be played at the higher seedon Tuesday, May 14, the #1 seeded team will host the #8 seeded team, the #2 seeded team will host the #7 seeded team, the #3 seeded team will host the #6 seeded team and the #4 seeded team will host the #5. The winning teams will advance from there. If there is a rain out, the match will be played on the next playable day.

The format that will be used is six (6) singles and three (3) doubles, with repeaters permitted in the doubles matches. We will use the ten (10) game pro set scoring system with Ads and will use a 12 point tie-breaker at 10 all. You have to announce your singles and doubles players at the start of the overall match. If a player cannot play due to injury or illness, that team must shift all players up one position until all singles positions are filled. A team cannot substitute for the injured/ill player with a player below the #6 slot (unless it is the #6 player injured or ill).”

In order to rank the teams, the committee will review all match results and formulate a weekly ranking. We will publish the weekly ranking every Monday. Our first ranking will be published on April 8and the final rankings will be distributed on May5. The top eight teams from each division will enter the tournament.

Thereafter, your season results should be emailed to the committee weekly each Friday after all matches have been played for the week so we can update the database and vote for the poll appropriately. Failure to send in weekly results may result in your team being dropped from the weekly ranking. If you no longer wish to participate in the State Tennis Tournament, please let me know as soon as possible.

I look forward to communicating with anyone who has questions or comments to help us get started.

Sincerely;

Rob Lee
