HISTORY MAJOR CHECKLIST

___ Total of 36 credits in History (minimum); not more than 4 credits at 100-level

___ History 299 (pre-requisite one 200-or 300-level history class; complete prior to senior year)

___ History 401 (fall semester senior year)

___ One “Comparisons and Encounters” class*

___ One “Pre-Modern” class (at 100-, 200- or 300-level)#

___ One 200-or 300-level class in at least four geographical areas, two of which will be used for the oral exam:

___ Africa/African Diaspora

___ Ancient Mediterranean

___ Asia

___ Europe

___ Islamic World

___ Latin America

___ United States

___ At least two courses (200- or 300-level) in the same geographic field, connected chronologically or thematically, for the field exam

___ One 400-level research seminar. This class cannot be used to fulfill any other requirements. Usually taken senior year. Juniors, with instructor consent, may register for a seminar if they have completed 299 and have taken at least one 200- or 300-level course which could serve as background for the seminar.

___ Not more than 8 credits in off-campus coursework (AP, transfer or study-abroad)

*Comparisons and Encounters within one region can count for both a geographical area and the Comparisons and Encounters requirement. Classes that are trans-regional only count for Comparisons and Encounters. Please see the approved list of classes on the History Department’s homepage.
