Summer Reading

GERMAN 3 Pre AP

In preparation for next years Pre-AP German course you will have to read “Die Schildbürger” written in German over the summer:

„Die Schildbuerger“ is a collection of stories about very simple people. The stories originated in the 16th century.

You do not have to read the originals; simpler, modern versions in German can be found on the following web-sites:

(here you can even hear some of the stories)

The stories are very well known in Germany. When making an internet search you will find many more sites offering “Die Schildbuerger” or “Die Bürger von Schilda” as they are sometimes called.

You have to read the following stories about “die Schildbürger”:

Notice that the same story may have slightly different titles. Below are two/three as they appear on the above websites. Watch for keywords.

NOTICE: If you do not have internet access at home you can go to a local library and use the internet there free of charge.

Select from each story 5 verbs,5 nouns and 5 adjectives/adverbs that you would find helpful for retelling the story. (KEYWORDS) (The stories are written in the past tense. You will have to search for the infinitive form of the verb. Write the infinitive form)

On a sheet or paper, write the title of each story. Beneath each title write the following:

A list of your words for the story:

Make three columns: noun (incl. gender), verb, adjective/adverb

Five sentences in the conversational past tense summarizing the story while using all your words. Use connecting words, so your sentences are not a listing but a coherent paragraph.

Your assignment must be handwritten and neat. The writing will be taken up on the second day of German 3 PreAP.

A test (major grade) over the reading assignment will be given within the first days of the upcoming school-year.

It is a good idea to continue practicing your German over the summer.

Regular review and practice, just a few minutes every day, or every other day will make a major difference in your German language skills.

Here is a great website that allows you to review and practice your vocabulary and grammar:

http://www.deutsch-lernen.com/

The site has multiple levels of German instruction and practice. Choose beginners and move from there.

Finally, if you don’t have a dictionary yet, while on the computer you can find German dictionaries on the internet. The one I use is LEO found at http://dict.leo.org/?lang=en There are many other dictionary that are easier to use for a beginner. You can find them by making a Google search for “English-German Dictionary”.

Hab einen schönen Sommer und viel Spaß beim Lesen!
