Hello SMLPSA Membership,

We begin the new Fiscal Year this month and the Open House we had on 9/26 was a great success. We have lots of new members, and there are still discount coupons out there in issues of the Eagle and Franklin News Post for people to get $10 off their individual or family membership for 2015-2016. I am so glad to see an increased interest in our Club, our Range, and the Shooting Sports. I don’t have to explain to anyone who supports and appreciates our Second Amendment Rights how important it is to stick together as a strong voice for these rights to our Government Leaders. It is more than apparent that every time a tragedy occurs in this Country involving firearms; it is all too easy for the Liberal Agenda to blame the firearm and not the person in control of it. Obviously, no one wants to look at social problems including the serious decline of the family in this Country, the huge drop in education standards, and the impact that has on inner city children and their future. Then of course we have a serious medication problem in this Country where drug companies make a fortune off of pushing legal drugs that alter the mind and mental state and have tremendous negative side effects on the people taking them. People (mostly children) with any type of behavioral disorders are labeled with some “form” of dysfunctional disorder and then placed on psychotropic drugs that literally leave these kids as zombies. Add to this problem the availability or access to legally owned or purchased firearms, and you have a ticking time bomb.

Sadly, we do not have representation of the people who firmly believe in the 2nd Amendment, and are willing to take a realistic look at the social problems in this Country rather than blame something based on thier Political Agenda.

We also see a tremendous strain on every Nation around the World with their own internal conflicts and fighting which is causing a mass exodus of people, some of whom are good and need our help, others who are part of a Trojan Horse exercise in spreading Jihadist Terror.

We need to constantly be vigilante with our surroundings and know that at any time, in any place, terrorism can and will strike us at home. We can choose to be victims, or we can choose to stand and fight, I myself, choose the latter and keep constantly prepared by going to the range and keeping proficient with my self-defense firearm.

I will not hesitate to protect those around me who I love, and a perfect stranger as well who needs my help. I feel we have reached a threshold in our Country never seen before where not only are we trying to be destroyed from within, but our enemies are inside our border and waiting patiently to strike.
We also have an unprecedented level of crime in this Country due to the social breakdown and drug use and abuse. This causes desperate people to do desperate things and commit crimes in broad daylight now. People are being robbed and killed for as little as $20 because there really isn’t any appreciation for human life anymore on the streets and society as a whole has shown the same deaf ear.

I’m not preaching from my soapbox hear. I am just placing the facts of life in front of you to let you know that we are in dangerous times, and must keep ourselves trained and protected if we are to survive.

I hope all of you will use the range on a regular basis, and keep up your proficiency with your gun. Please know again that ammo and targets are readily available for purchase at the range and the first and third Monday’s of the month are the Shooting League activity nights and men and woman are welcome and suggested to patronize this group if you really want to hone your shooting skills. Paul Giammattei, Ed Groeber, Tracy Scheffling, Greg Tornatore, John Menna and all the RSO’s who help cover this event are doing a tremendous job in building handgun skills, safe handling and accuracy in placing shots.

Just so most of you know, when I train Law Enforcement Officers it is stressed that the normal scenario they will encounter in a violent home invasion or domestic dispute will place a handgun pointing at them in typically under 21 feet and give them only 2-3 seconds to respond with deadly force. That is a lightning fast decision that must be made if that Officer wants to go home at the end of his shift. It also places a huge stressful burden on them to respond with pinpoint accuracy with their shot so they don’t hurt or kill an innocent bystander.

If anyone is interested, I teach a home defense class that shows you how to defend yourself in a closed quarters situation, as well as teaching you how to fire from the hip or holster and hit someone as far as 30 feet away without fully projecting your firearms or using your sights.

This is an intense 4 hour course and costs $35 per person.

After I have my heart defibrillator implant in early November, I will schedule the class. As always, if any member wants one on one firearms training, I will gladly do that for $30 per hour and having you shooting bullseye in no time.

Lastly, at our Annual Meeting on 9/23/15 the Club voted to make a donation to the 4-H of a high tech, high resolution Infra-Red Camera Security System for 24/7 monitoring of the range. I feel this is long overdue because I do not know of any other firearms facility which sells guns, rents guns or has range shooting lanes that does not have a camera security system.
The truth of the matter is – should there be an incident or event, this system will maintain and store critical information which will help to determine exactly what occurred, and how we can prevent it from happening again, as well as add a level of security to Club assets which includes the $3000 + of ammo we keep on hand for members and guests. I will order this system shortly and hope to have it installed before the end of the month. It will cost the Club $600 and will be our 2015-16 donation to 4-H for range operations.

The beauty of this Home Defense Shotgun is that it is chambered in 20 gauge. This round gives about half the recoil of a 12 gauge identical model and can easily be used by children, woman and men adults without the fear of losing control of the firearm. It is lethal in a home defense situation and will stop the threat immediately. There are a variety of home defense rounds made for 20 gauge some of them with very low recoil designed for high accuracy and repeat shots. I highly recommend everyone have a shotgun as part of their home defense package because if you have multiple criminals who break into your house, this is one of the few weapons that will convince them to leave immediately! It is available as shown in the two pictures above with pistol grip to bring the gun overall length down to 26-1/2” as well as tactical lights, forearms and forward assist pistol grips. With an 8 round capacity – there is a lot of firepower there to make a statement.

Equal parts knockdown power, intimidation factor and ease of use, the shotgun is the ultimate personal defense weapon. But to get everything out of a smooth bore when it matters most means feeding it the right loads. Here’s are some top choices for defensive shotgun ammunition certain to come through in the most dire situations.

Federal Personal Defense Shotgun No. 4

Introduced in 2010 and finding plenty of fans since then, Federal’s Personal Defense Shotgun 2¾-inch No. 4 loads are available in both 12-gauge and 20-gauge versions. Tested extensively for home defense situations, these No. 4 loads are designed to generate optimal 15 yard patterns through an improved cylinder choke and are made to dissipate energy upon hitting walls to help you avoid pass-throughs on missed shots. Federal Personal Defense Shotgun 00 Buck

Federal’s Personal Defense 00 Buck loads are heavier hitting than No. 4s for improved lethality at slightly greater ranges, yet deliver tight patterning courtesy of Federal’s patented FLITECONTROL wad. This special shot cup holds shot tight until it has exited the muzzle and then separates from it to allow it to fly true toward the target at 1,145 fps. (www.federalpremium.com)

Hornady Critical Defense 410 Triple Defense

Smaller gauge guns can be more user friendly for smaller shooters, such as women, but there is no reason these guns shouldn’t be as lethal as larger gauges. The Hornady specialized load is packed with a triple projectile stack that consists of two 35-caliber round balls topped with a single nonjacketed FTX slug. (www.hornady.com)

Winchester PDX1 12 Defender

Winchester mixes a devastating defensive recipe with their PDX1 12 Defender loaded with three pellets of Grex buffered 00 plated buckshot set atop a 1-ounce rifled slug. This load provides the ultimate mix of well-aimed punch with scattergun forgiveness. (www.winchester.com)

Winchester PDX1 410 Defender

Like it’s 12-gauge big brother, the 410 Defender load packs plenty of punch launching three plated Defense Disc projectiles and 12 pellets of plated BB shot. While it was made for use in the famed Taurus Judge, this is also an ideal short-range engagement load made for a long gun that is more compact than larger shotguns and doesn’t generate as much recoil. (www.winchester.com)

Remington Defensive Buckshot

To be effective at self-defense, a gunowner needs to practice shooting and that means time at the range. Remington made it more affordable for shotgun owners to do this in 2013 by packaging their top defensive load—the 2 ¾-inch 12-gauge load of Express 00 buckshot—in 25- or 100-round packages. Inside the shell, a Power Piston one-piece wad enhances consistent patterns, while polymer buffering around the shot limits pellet deformities for better flight. Suggested retail for the 25-round box is $22 and a 100-round box sells for just under $90. (www.remington.com)

Remington Ultimate Defense Combo Pack

We’ve covered it in the pages of Gun Digest before, but it’s worth another mention. Remington has met the needs of Judge and other combination revolver fans by creating a pack that combines 10 .45 Colt cartridges with 10 .410 shotshells. The .45s are loaded with Golden Saber High-Performance jacketed bullets while each .410 load is packed with four 000 buckshot. Suggested retail is $34. (www.remington.com)

Lightfield Home Defender Rubber Slug

Greatly reducing the risk of wall pass-throughs and even lethality, while ensuring an anchoring transfer of energy to an immediate threat, Lightfield’s Rubber Slug is a 12-gauge 130-grain projectile that leaves the muzzle at 600 fps. Designed to be nonlethal when fired at a distance, the load can penetrate a body at extremely close range and can be lethal in those situations. (www.litfld.com)
