HEFFLEY CREEK PARENT ADVISORY COUNCIL

MEETING: Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Present: Apryl Duthie, Kristin Faessler, Derrell Folk, Glenda Grether, Darlene Gordon, Anne Keith, Jill MacLean, Brenda Matuga, Debbie Smith

1. Call to Order: 12:45 pm

2. Approve Minutes - March 5, 2008 – Apryl/Brenda

4. Principal’s Report

a) Relay Fest: March 11th, 16 intermediate students participated in first Relay Fest in District. Great participation by students and support by parents;

b) Spaghetti Dinner: Div. 1 fundraiser for Strathacona Park, April 4th at 5:30pm;

c) Four TRU student teachers will begin a two week practicum beginning April 7th (2 teachers in Gr. 2/3 class and 2 in Gr. 6/7 class);

d) School Support Worker Student – Cheerie Beeds started her final practicum at our school just after Spring Break;

e) Young Peoples Concert – last one of the year, morning of April 9th;

f) Battle of the Books – Ms. Bottos and 3 teams of 3 students will attend Barriere Elementary for the competition on April 9th at 12:30pm;

g) Talent Show – Ms. de Jardin is organizing this event scheduled for April 30th;

h) Pitch-In – Ms. de Jardin is organizing this school wide activity scheduled for April 25th;

i) Emergency Preparedness Week 2008 – May 4 – 10th, Ken Hart;

j) Strathacona Park field trip – Div. 1, May 5 – 9th;

k) Forestry Presentation – ‘The Fire Story – An Unpredictable Truth’ will be provided to all grades, May 21-23rd;

l) School Improvement Plan – April 4th, Heffley SPC will complete the 3 year plan (08/09 Writing, 09/10 and 10/11 Numeracy) and delivered to the SBO on April 11th;

m) Booster Seat Law – information in the April 7th newsletter;

n) Steel Box Storage – Beginning April 7th SD73 electricians will be improving lighting throughout the school. Materials and tools will be stored in box. No climbing on or around the storage box;

o) Wooden Fence Fish – further information has been found regarding copyright. Program offered with all supplies from start to finish product, approximate cost $500. Darlene is looking into this further; and

p) 2008/2009 Agendas – Orders are coming due for next year. Will PAC be paying for them? Treasurer has suggested waiting for account balances and then vote.

5. Committee Project Reports

a) One-to-One – Andrea Copley,

b) Campbell’s Soup Labels – Andrea Copley, Spring contest ended, Gr. 1 winners;

c) Hot Dog Days – Anne/Sam – Apr. 11th – chicken noodle soup/pizza pretzels/apple slices, various fruit cups and juices;

d) Pizza Day – Brenda Matuga, Wed, April 23rd. Suggested to pre-order pizza by the slice for Brock Pool Day, passed;

e) Popcorn Day – Glenda Grether, no changes;

f) Milk Program – Glenda/Kristin Faessler, Order forms must be handed back so milk orders can be correct;

g) Fundraising – Mother’s Day ‘Spa Basket’ raffle tickets sold from Heather Scollon, $1 each; and

h) Treasurer Report – Jill MacLean, asking for a signor to go to Bank and request missing statements (casino/general) to get a correct balance. Drafted a ‘deposit form’, which will come in to effect immediately, kept in the PAC locked cupboard in the office behind Heather Scollon. The key has been moved from PAC box, see Heather Scollon when needed. Would like to collect all incoming cash/cheques on the 25th of every month. Money is to be kept in locked cupboard. Suggested that the School water bill be reviewed regarding high cost.

6. Old Business

a) Bike Rodeo – Anne Keith, held at Rayleigh School on Sat. April 19th, 10am-12pm, community event, RCMP involvement, 7 educational stations, would PAC make a donation $25? Tabled;

b) RCMP Auxiliary - Speedwatch Program (Anne);

c) Transit Program – Classes Ride for Free – opportunity to town (Anne);

d) Sport Camps – volleyball/basketball programs (Anne);

e) Recess Snack Program – Kristin Faessler, program is a success, approximately 45-50 students participating; and

f) Fruit & Veggie Snack Program – Anne – In June will receive information whether the application has been accepted.

7. New Business

g) Computer Club – Derrell Folk – participating students: Tessa, Justin, Brett & Johnny, purchased a $34 memory stick

h) Bev Bullock Memorial – At the next staff meeting (April 21st) staff will have some suggestions of what kind of tree and possible thoughts for the plaque. This was passed earlier Sept/Oct 2007. The goal is to plant the tree when the Gr. 6/7 return from Strathacona. Picnic table for outside Gr. 6/7 class, not passed.

i) O’Keefe Ranch field trip – May 9th – Ms. de Jardin & Ms. Amon have asked if PAC would consider helping with the expense of this trip. Estimated bus ride (return) $259.77. Student admission $222, Adult volunteer admission $60, teachers are free. Total cost $542.00. The Treasurer suggested that account balances needed to be confirmed and then it was suggested that each student pay $5.00 and PAC could pay the difference. Still needed to be voted and passed; and

j) Teacher Appreciation Luncheon – May (not discussed).

8. Correspondence/Education

a) Emergency ManagementBC, dated March 13, 2008; and

b) BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation – Booster Seats: These will become mandatory in BC on July 1, 2008 for children 18kg (40lbs) until their 9th birthday, unless they have reached the height of 145cm (4’9”). Further information will be in April newsletter.
