Health for Life Skills

Auburn Mountainview High School

Instructor – Theresa Haynes 253-804-4539

Welcome to Health Class! The goal of this class is to develop you into a health literate individual. A health literate individual understands health information and services and applies it to make a healthier and more successful life.

To accomplish this goal of health literacy, you will work to learn and demonstrate mastery of health information and skills taught in this class. The information and skills were adopted from The Auburn School District Health Power Standards, the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements for Health and Fitness, and the National Health Education Standards for Health.

Five units of study will organize the information and skills learned in the class.

1. Personal Health and Safety

2. Emotional/Social Health

3. Nutrition and Physical Fitness

4. Sexual Health and Relationships

5. Substance Abuse

To learn and demonstrate the mastery of the health information and skills of this class, the following assignments and assessments will be used:

1. Workbook Completion – The workbook is used daily. It is where you do your daily work and includes directions for most projects. Do not copy workbook pages from other students!

2. Warm-ups – These are questions you will answer at the beginning of every class period. You must copy the question and write the answer within the first 5 minutes of class. When absent, you need to make up the Question of the Day when you return. The Question of the Day(s) often appears on unit tests.

3. Current Issues – These are health articles with a write–up attached. They are the focus of shared information (student presentation) due on 10 scheduled Fridays. They are worth 15 points each.

4. Health Concern Action Plan – This is a PowerPoint project that you will complete and present to the class. You will choose a health concern, research it, and develop courses of action. This project is recommended for a “Best Work”. 100 points

5. Projects – There will be a homework project for several units. Detailed handouts will be available in advance of due dates.

6. Classroom Based Assessments (CBA) – Students will perform this assessment by responding to a prompt and executing several tasks. Performance prompts ask the student to perform according to the criteria outlines in the prompt. These assessments may be given in additional to unit assessments, and the accumulative course assessment. 100 points

All assignments and assessments in this class will be assigned a point value. Grades are computed by dividing your cumulative points into the total points for the class. You can view your current grade through Family Access. This is a required course (.50 credits) for graduation.

Grading Scale – A 100-93, A- 92.99-90, B+ 89.99-88, B 87.99-83, B- 82.99-80, C+ 79.99-78, C 77.99-73, C- 72.99-70, D+ 69.99-68, D 67.99-60, F 59.99-0

Assignments or assessments done on a day that you are absent may be made-up for full point value. You are required to make up work missed. You must do the work to receive the credit! Absences do not excuse you from the work. Attendance will directly affect your progress in this class. Excessive absences and tardies will negatively affect your grade.

To create a class environment that promotes learning and fun for all people, and to practice successful social health skills, you will be asked to do the following:

1. Be on time to class and be seated before the tardy bell rings.

2. Bring required materials/assignments to class.

3. Do your own work and participate in group activities.

4. Pay attention – listen/watch speakers/videos/presentations.

5. Be friendly, polite, and positive to your teacher and your peers.

6. Clean up after yourself.

7. Wait in your seats to be dismissed.

8. Communicate your needs in an appropriate and timely manner.

9. Follow all school rules.

10. Healthy snacks and beverages are allowed. Beverage containers must have a cap.

11. Show respect by listening respectfully to your teacher, peers, and guest speakers. By showing respect you will practice waiting until all instructions are given before raising your hand.

We will be watching several videos throughout the year that are on file in our school library. I feel these videos add to the understanding of the curriculum material. In order for a student to watch these videos, regardless of its rating or the student’s age, I must have a parent/guardian’s signature on file. If a student’s parent/guardian does not want their student to watch a particular video, please indicate so by signing the signature page. These students will be given the alternative assignment to be completed in the library. Please contact me with any questions, concerns, or comments.
