This course challenges students to investigate current and 21st century medical and health care topics using computerized data bases, the Internet, media, and visiting health team professionals. Topics include the world of biomedical technology, the language of medicine, present and evolving biomedical specialties, biomedical ethics, and health career development.

HB10 Honors Biomedical Technology

This course challenges students to investigate and analyze current and 21st century medical and health care practices using computerized data bases, the Internet, media, and visiting health team professionals. Topics include the world of biomedical technology, the language of medicine, present and evolving biomedical specialties, biomedical ethics, and health career development. Students will be required to expand their knowledge on the above topics through research, critical thinking, peer teaching, and project development.

HU10 Health Team Relations

This course introduces students who are potential health care workers to their role and function as health team members. Topics include terminology, the history of health care, health care agencies, ethics, legal responsibilities, medical math, careers, communication, and career decision making.

HU40 Health Science 1

This course is offered to students seeking a career in the medical field. Emphasis is on investigating the health care delivery system, its services, occupations, and related sciences. Topics include the study of the language of medicine, medical mathematics, microbiology, anatomy and physiology, diseases/disorders, diagnoses, treatments, patient/client care regimens, career development, and future technological innovations.

HU42 Health Science 2

This course focuses on the National Healthcare Foundation Standards and Accountability Criteria and the National Health Science Career Cluster Model pathways. The course is designed to help students expand their understanding of financing and trends of health care agencies, fundamentals of wellness, legal and ethical issues, concepts of teamwork, and effective communication.

HN43 Nursing Fundamentals

This course is designed for students who are interested in medical careers where personal care and basic nursing care skills are used. This course is an enhanced adaptation of the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation Nurse Aide I curriculum. Students who successfully complete the course will be prepared to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) competency exam for Certified Nurse Aide I. A clinical internship in a long-term care facility is required. HOSA activities support networking with health care agencies and professionalism through the development of clinical expertise and volunteerism.

Course Note: Students must provide their own transportation to clinical. Nursing Fundamentals is usually taken by seniors able to take the NNAAP after completing the course.

____ CTE Health Advanced Studies

This course requires students to work under the guidance of a teacher with expertise in the content of the completer course in collaboration with community members, business representatives, and other school-based personnel. The four parts of the course include writing a research paper, producing a product, developing a portfolio, and delivering a presentation.
