HAWLEMONT WEEKLY NEWS

From the Principal:

Interested in volunteering? It has come to my attention that there are some people interested in volunteering their time to help the Hawlemont students and staff. If you are one of these people, please call me directly. I would be happy to chat with you to find out your interests, strengths, and availability. Volunteering would also be a great opportunity for me to get to know you better and for you to see the wonderful things that are happening at Hawlemont. I hope to hear from you soon!

Responsive Classroom Connection:

An area of focus in the Responsive Classroom Approach is language. “Language is one of the most powerful tools available to teachers. It permeates every aspect of teaching and learning. We cannot give a lesson, welcome a child into the room, or handle a classroom conflict without using words. Children cannot do a science observation or reading assignment or learn a classroom routine without listening to and interpreting their teacher’s words. And what they hear and interpret – the message they get from their teacher – has a huge impact on how they think and act, and ultimately how they learn.” (The Power of Our Words by Paula Denton) In the next few entries, I will focus on the types of language and its power.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS:

We had a very successful Hobby Horse Bazaar! We were able to make enough money to continue our garden next year! Thank you everyone who helped to make our booth so profitable.

Our SCA volunteers will be coming into the classroom two times a week to work with the children. David and Tom are both very energetic and have great ideas to share with us about the environment.

We will be having a small holiday event on Thursday the 23rd of December. This is a half day with no lunch. If anyone is interested in helping to plan something for this day please let me know.

Have a great week

Kimberly Orzechowski

SCHOOL NURSE

Well winter has blown into town. This is just a reminder that the children go outside for recess and need warm clothing. Even though we do not have much snow at the moment, it is a good idea to pack snow pants, boots, hats and gloves along with winter coats.

All of the screenings for height, weight, vision and hearing have been completed. If your child did not pass one of these screenings you will be receiving a referral letter in the mail. Remember that the screenings, we do at school are not diagnostic but they do show an abnormality that needs further attention by your primary care physician or other specialist. Please let me know how you intend to follow up on these referrals.

If you have a child in First or Fourth Grade you will find an information packet with information about your child’s BMI. Included in this packet is information about your child’s weight, along with healthy eating and physical activity tips. Please take some time to read through this information.

As always if you have any questions or concerns about anything, please call me at school.

STAY SAFE, HEALTHY and WARM,

Deb Vandale

SIXTH GRADE NEWS:

Thank you to everyone who helped with the 6th grade fund raising at the Hobby Horse Bazaar. Several families donated items for the tag sale and many parents and students were there to help manage the sale of Poinsettias, Gift Baskets, Tag Sale, and the ever popular 50/50 Raffle. In all we made over $700, and the Gift Basket Sales are on-going, the drawing will be December 17th. If you donated items and want the left-overs back, please stop in soon, they will be going away by the middle of next week. In class we are beginning a new reading unit about “Growing Up”, in science we have been doing experiments determining the density of various objects. In math we are working with fractions and decimals and students are writing a story focusing on establishing and resolving a “conflict”. We will be working with Tom and David from the SCA over the next couple of months as well. In January the 6th grade will be hosting a Family Luncheon on Friday, January 14th, so mark your calendars now. More information to follow soon.
