Major: Business Administration

Career: Advertising, Marketing and Proportions Managers

Job duties:

Advertising managers supervise people. In large firms, they oversee advertising and promotion staffs that are included in house account, creative, and media services departments. These departments assess the need for advertising, develop it and select the communication media for it, respectively. In small firms, advertising managers serve as a contact between the firm and the advertising managers serve as a contact between the firm and the advertising or promotion agency.

Promotions managers supervise promotion specialists and direct promotion programs that unite purchase incentives to increase sales.

Marketing managers develop the firm’s marketing strategy. With the help of other employees, they estimate the demand for products and or services provided bye the firm. They also identify potential markets, develop pricing strategies and supervise product development.

Education required:

A broad educational background is appropriate for entering these managerial jobs and the minimum education requirement is a bachelor’s degree, many employers prefer people with experience in related occupations and a wide liberal arts background. As a result of this, a bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology, philosophy, literature or journalism is acceptable. For marketing and promotions management positions, many employers favor bachelors or master’s degrees in business administration with an emphasis in marketing.

For advertising management position, a bachelor’s degree in advertising or journalism would be valued.

Earnings:

The entry level salary for marketing majors who graduated in 2005 was an average of $33,873, and the starting salaries for advertising majors were an average of 31,340.

Job outlook:

These positions will be sought by other managers and experienced professional, which will result in a keen competition. College graduates with a high level of creativity, computer skills, strong communication skills and related experience will have the best job opportunities.

Interpersonal and technical skills:

For theses positions computer skills are required. Managers should be familiar with word processing and database applications, and being able to work on the internet. They should also have the ability to speak a foreign language for more employment opportunities.

Other qualifications include being creative, resistant to stress, flexible and decisive. Managers also need strong communication skills and an exceptional ability to establish and maintain effective personal relationships.

I think I already posses a good level of creativity and the computer skills. However, I may want to work more on the communication skills and on getting experience related to the career.

Plan:

My plan for continuing upgrading my skills in order to keep current within the job market is the following:

1. Get a bachelor’s degree.

2. Get jobs related to the career in order to get experience.

3. Try to be always aware of the market, by reading the newspaper business section or any magazines related to the career.
