Guidelines for Effective Affirmations

The Success Principles

Jack Canfield

1. Start with the words “I am.”

2. Use the present tense.

3. State what you want in the positive. Affirm what you want, not what you don’t want.

4. Keep it brief.

5. Make it as specific as possible.

6. Include an action word ending with –ing.

7. Include at least one dynamic emotion or feeling word. (Enjoying, joyfully, happily, celebrating, proudly, calmly, peacefully, delighted, enthusiastic, lovingly, secure, serenely, triumphant).

8. Make affirmations for yourself, not others.

9. Add the words, this or something better to the end of your affirmation.

Example:

I am enjoying driving my new Indigo Porsche Carrera down PCH.

I am celebrating my newly remodeled house.
