“Fabric Rescue: Beyond Making Do”
Mary Ann Kelmer has always been a scrap quilter. Her “Fabric Rescue” patterns call for fabric amounts that scrap quilters can relate to. She travels to quilt shows with her business, Mary Ann’s Scrap Basket.
I’m sure a lot of you met her at the Miami Valley Quilters’ Guild Show in May 2006. She was very popular. Mary Ann lives in Bloomington, Illinois, with her husband, Rich; daughter, Grace; and two rescued dogs.
For those of us who worked, took classes and only explored her booth, make sure you are at the October meeting. You will learn the meaning of “Fabric Rescue” and have some fun along the way.
A Tribute to Martha
Several weeks ago Martha Miller passed away. She was a long time member of our guild (the late 1980’s). We are going to feature some of her quilts at the October meeting. Fern Miller will give a little background on Martha’s quilting.

A Note from the President
Here it is TWO Fridays after the meeting, and I haven’t gotten a desperate call from Chris telling me to hurry up already! Chris wouldn’t actually say anything like that, as she is always calm and polite, but you get the drift. Usually by Monday or Tuesday she is calling to remind me that I’ve forgotten again.
I don’t have anything to say! What a refreshing change of pace. Oh, give me the trip to two schools and I’m sure to rectify the situation. Be back in an hour or so.
Well, a couple of hours.
If you didn’t attend Shirley Liby’s workshop you missed out on a lot of fun. Four different techniques, some of which we already knew about, but with a twist – Paper piecing with 3D effects. Fabric mosaics, which for me didn’t start out fun but became so, and herky-jerky appliqué, a quick and interesting way to appliqué simple designs. Just drop your feed dogs and use the zigzag stitch. Fast, easy and there really isn’t a wrong way to get the job done.
My favorite was cutting up all those landscape fabrics we buy, but seldom know what to do with, and making new art. Kind of a paint-by-numbers, but with fabric. It was much neater and fast.
Bring your finished projects for show and tell in October.
We now have four committee chairs for the 2008 Quilt Show. That leaves about eight more empty seats. I believe most of us think that these jobs can wait a few more months and at this rate they will. Every show requires much forethought and preparation, especially for publicizing the event and finding a workshop(s) teacher. Rhonda Tiefert e-mailed some very interesting suggestions used in some of the other guilds she participates in. I’ll discuss these more in depth after our next board meeting. It would provide for some interesting additions to the guild as a whole and to the show.
I can’t emphasize enough the need for many new people to take the challenge of operating our guild. By new, I don’t necessarily mean those who have just joined, but those who haven’t done a position of any kind. There are many, and I might need to have new brains to collaborate with come the New Year. We generally have fun and make new friends while we’re at it.
Retreat is in good hands with Diane McClane and Lyvonne Jacobs. They have already started registering for rooms. Make sure you see them early as seating goes very quickly.
I really didn’t have much to share this month. Enjoy what’s left of September and I’ll see you in October.

Pointers & Tips for Quilting
Value Finder: If you have access to a photocopy machine, you have the perfect “value” finder. Just slip a piece, or several pieces onto the glass, close the cover, and copy. Instant values, without the distraction of color.
Portable Ironing Board: To make a portable lightweight ironing board, cut the cardboard tube that fabric comes on in half lengthwise. Cover it all around with batting or terry toweling. Now cover with fabric by pinning in place with glass head pins or T-pins. Great to keep by the sewing machine for those little quick ironing jobs!
Aching Back: Does your back ache after a cutting session on a too low table? Raise it by using Bed Risers, available in most Bed and Bath stores.
Stabilizer: If you want to use fabrics paints or fabric pens to decorate a quilt block, try stabilizing it first by ironing on freezer paper to the backside. The plastic side of the freezer paper will temporarily fuse to fabric by ironing it on, and it will peel right off when you are done. This is also great for making quilt labels.
Set up an efficient work space: The “kitchen triangle” that interior designers insist upon works for quilting, too! Instead of a “sink, stove, work surface,” set up a “machine, pressing, work surface” triangle. Position everything so you only have to take a few steps in between. This saves time and energy when working on large projects.
Viewing Quilts: At quilt shows when you can’t stand back far enough to appreciate the patterns on the larger quilts, use a door peep-hole. This lets you stand up close and see the whole quilt. You will be amazed at some of the secondary patterns that emerge.
Organization: Use a metal utensil rack at the hardware store (like you use in the kitchen for hanging spoons etc.) Place it on the wall near your sewing machine and hang your rotary cutters, scissors, pinking shears, etc. right beside the sewing machine.

25th Annual Harvest of Quilts
Presented by Towne Squares Quilt Club, Inc. the show will by held at the Darke County Fairgrounds, Youth Building on State Rt. 49 in Greenville, Oh. Admission is $3.00. Hours are Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Show will feature a fashion show, auction, quilt raffle drawing, merchant mall, door prizes, scissor sharpening and demonstrations. Show is held at the Hoffman United Methodist Church, 201 S. Main St., West Milton, Oh. Quilts will be on display October 15 – October 29. Show sponsor is asking to display your quilt art. Ohio Amish Country Quilt Shop Hop
Quilt shops in Amish country will be joining together to make this a fabulous 3 day event filled with fabric, fun and prizes. The theme this year is “Days Gone By.” At each shop, you will receive a different, FREE pattern, and be able to purchase a fabric kit for that block. Pick up your free passport at any of the participating quilt shops on November 2, 3 and 4. For more information, email .
