Grade 10 Visual Arts: Mandala Assignment

Objective: to design a symbolic self-portrait Mandala.

PART 1:

1. In your Sketchbook, define the terms; mandala, radial balance and symmetry.

2. In your sketchbooks, make a list of symbols that relate to you’re:

§ Cultural background and heritage

§ Your hobbies

§ Your pets

§ Your favorite possession

§ Your family

After creating your list, begin drawing some of the symbols from your list. You need to draw at lease 8 symbols in your sketchbook.

PART 2:

1. Make a pencil sketch of your Mandala in your sketchbook. You need a minimum of six symbols. Remember: mandala patterns are usually based on concentrically arranged elements. Your mandala will have radial symmetry and the arrangement of your symbols will create a unique visual pattern. Your mandala should be based on personal images about yourself.

2. Start your final Mandala. Draw it lightly in pencil FIRST. Then add color.

PART 3: IN YOUR SKECTHBOOKS

1. List and describe the symbols you used to create the motifs for your personal design.

2. Did you use radial balance to organize the motifs? How so?

3. What is the expressive quality of your personal Mandala? What does it represent about you?
4. If you were going to do this one more time, what, if anything, would you change?
