COMPLETE SET OF BOYS BASKETBALL RULES AT

BOYS BASKETBALL INFORMATION – Competition in boys’ basketball will be grades 1st through 12th. For purposes of determining grade eligibility, the grade of the athlete on October 1, 2011 shall be determining date.

Competition Divisions for District (State) Qualifying, Super Regional, and National Championships are as follows:

12th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 12th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 19 on August 31, 2012.

11th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 11th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 18 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 12th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 11th grade division, they can be no older than 17 on August 31, 2012.

10th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 10th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 17 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 11th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 10th grade division, they can be no older than 16 on August 31, 2012.

9th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 9th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 16 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 10th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 9th grade division, they can be no older than 15 on August 31, 2012.

8th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 8th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 15 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 9th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 8th grade division, they can be no older than 14 on August 31, 2012.

7th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 7th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 14 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 8th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 7th grade division, they can be no older than 13 on August 31, 2012.

6th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 6th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 13 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 7th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 6th grade division, they can be no older than 12 on August 31, 2012.

5th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 5th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 12 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 6th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 5th grade division, they can be no older than 11 on August 31, 2012.

4th Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 4th grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 11 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 5th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 5th grade division, they can be no older than 10 on August 31, 2012.

3rd Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 3rd grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 10 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 4th grade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 3rd grade division, they can be no older than 9 on August 31, 2012.

2nd Grade Division; An athlete must be in the 2nd grade as of October 1, 2011 and can be no older than 9 on August 31, 2012. For an athlete that is in the 3thgrade as of October 1, 2011 wanting to petition to play down in the 2nd grade division, they can be no older than 8 on August 31, 2012.

The AAU is a grade based organization. Each grade division consists of a 24 month age window which determines an athletes’ participation in that division. If an athlete’s age is outside the 24 month window in their grade, the athlete must play to the grade division that is normal and customary for their age. If an athlete is in any grade above what is normal and customary for their age, that athlete may petition to play down provided they meet the established criteria.

AAU MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

All participants and coaches must be members of the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). The annual membership fee applies to all AAU sports throughout the year.

ENTRY FEE

Varies per grade. Tournament format is pool play followed by single or double elimination depending upon number of teams entered and gym availability.

Send fee with entry blank to the Tournament Director. Number of games averaged per team in 2011 was four (4) games.

ROSTER OF PLAYERS

The roster is established at the time of the first game. It must be used throughout the state tournament. No additions or changes are permitted. National AAU rules limit the roster to fifteen (15) players in age tournaments.

BALLS

Game ball will be furnished for games only. Teams must bring their own warm up balls.

COACHES OF TEAMS

It is assumed that school personnel (compensated or not) who coach teams in these tournaments are familiar with and are in compliance with Iowa High School Athletic Association rules. Iowa AAU cannot rule on the eligibility of coaches.

AWARDS

Individual medals will be provided for the final four teams in each of the tournaments. Team trophies will be awarded to the championship team in each division. The most valuable player of each state tournament will be given an award by Iowa AAU.

SPECTATORS

Spectators are welcome. An admission charge will be made. Participating players and all AAU registered coaches will be admitted free with AAU membership card, for their games.

HOLD HARMLESS

The sponsoring organizations and the host schools will not be responsible for any injuries, loss of property, or any accidents that might occur during the tournaments.

UNIFORMS

Each team must have jerseys of like color with number preferably on front and back.

Teams competing in National Championships must have WHITE and dark jerseys as well as number on front and back.

PROOF OF AGE

Each participant must present a copy of his birth certificate to the tournament director prior to his first game to verify eligibility.

No player will be allowed to play without proof of age and grade.

PROOF OF GRADE

All players must have a school official sign the Entry Form roster that indicates the school they attend and the grade that they are presently attending.

PLAYER PARTICIPATION

  1. Only males may participate as players.
  2. A player may not participate later than the summer following his class graduation from high school or prep school.
  3. A player may participate in a Maximum of three (3) grade divisions of the AAU Boys’ Basketball program for which he can qualify. Players that compete in more thanone grade division must compete with the same AAU Club.

An athlete may participate in his own District or in a bordering District. At no time will a player be eligible when it is not a bordering District. A maximum of three (3) athletes will be allowed on a team from a bordering District

RESIDENCY

Residency – An athlete must compete with a club registered in the district of his bona fide residency unless he elects to compete under one of the following exceptions:

  1. An athlete may attach to a club in any district which shares a common border with the athlete’s district of residency.
  2. An athlete enrolled as a bona fide student at an educational institution located outside of his district of residency may elect to treat the district in which the school is located, as his district of residency.
  3. An athlete who is subject to a written joint custody arrangement may elect to treat the district of either custodian as his district or residency.

RULES

Iowa High School Athletic Union rules will be used. The 3-point will be used in all divisions.

SIZE OF BALL

The “undersized” basketball shall be used for all 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Divisions. Circumference shall be 28 1/2".

LENGTH OF QUARTERS

The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th Grade Divisions will play 6 minute quarters. The 7th Grade Division will play 7 minute quarters. All other divisions will play 8 minute quarters.

Game Time: The game time will also be the forfeit time. No grace period will be allowed.

COACHING RESTRICTIONS No person may be a coach for any team competing in an event for which he/she is the tournament director.

PRESS RULE

For 1st, 2nd, 3rd,4th grade, teams ahead by 20 points or more at any point in the second half and for 5th grade and older teams ahead by 30 points or more at any point in the second half, must play defense behind their three-point arc. If the lead drops below 20 or 30 points normal rules will resume. First offense: Warning,

All additional offenses: 2 shot technical.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM ROSTERS

A team that qualifies for a National Championship Tournament may add a maximum of seven (7) players to its District Roster for the purpose of participating in the National Tournaments. The total number of players designated to play in the National Tournament may not exceed fifteen (15) players.

  1. An athlete must have been able to satisfy all eligibility requirements (age, residence, etc.) unless approved by the Eligibility Committee.
  2. There shall be a maximum of three (3) cross boundary athletes on a roster at any time.
  3. A team advancing to a Division I National Championship may not add a player from another team advancing to a Division I National Championship in the same age group without the written permission of the Eligibility Committee.
  4. A team advancing to a Division II National Championship may not add any players from another team that is advancing to a Division II National Championship in the same age group without the written permission of the Eligibility Committee.
  5. A maximum of two (2) additional athletes may be added to the National Championship Roster after the entry deadline.

NOTE: QUALIFYING TEAM: a team which has met the requirementsto compete in the National Championship.

ADVANCING TEAM: a team which is competing (participating) in the National Championship. Teams will register online at

INDIVIDUAL MEMBERSHIP PERIOD:

The 2012 membership period is from September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012.

AAU MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS:

The AAU will continue its regular membership program, which provides athlete accident insurance and general liability insurance for all AAU sanctioned practices and competitions - as a benefit of membership. All aspects of our current program will be maintained for regular membership of $12.00 per youth athlete and $14.00 for non-athletes (coaches).

The “Added Benefit” or “AB” membership provides athlete accident and general liability insurance for athletes, non-athletes (coaches), clubs and Districts in specified non-AAU-sanctioned competitions. The “AB” card must be purchased when the athlete or coach first registers with the AAU. Athletes/Non-Athletes (Coaches) may not pay the difference in the cards to “up-grade” to an “AB” card at a later date. The “AB” card is available to all youth athletes and non-athletes.

For team sports, all athletes and coaches on the team must have the “AB” membership for it to be in effect. Some of the members cannot have regular membership and some have “AB” memberships. In team sports, both general liability and athlete accident insurance will be extended to AAU teams participating in

supervised and scheduled non-AAU-sanctioned competitions and practices. Coverage will not extend to any non-AAU-sanctioned competitions hosted or conducted by AAU clubs. The cost of the “AB” card is $14.00 for youth and $16.00 for non-athletes (coaches).

Membership Fee: $12 athlete /$14 non-athlete or AB membership $14 athlete/$16non-athlete.

CLUB MEMBERSHIP – Register on the Internet at The AAU code says that basketball teams are to have a club membership. You can get one membership for all of your school teams, but each of your athletes and non-athletes (coaches) must have individual memberships.

AAU TOURNAMENTSare covered by comprehensive insurance program for athletes, coaches and volunteers if your tournament is AAU sanctioned.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT QUALIFICATION CRITERIA

In the District and Super Regional Championships, teams qualify for the National Championships based upon the following criteria: (Total number of teams in each age group participating in Division I and Division II qualifying events count towards the team totals for advancing to Nationals.)

  1. When there are 3 teams
  1. One (1) team only may advance for Division I
  2. One (1) team may advance for Division II.
  1. When there are 4-6 teams
  1. Two (2) teams may advance for Division I
  2. Two (2) teams may advance for Division II
  1. When there are 7-9 teams
  1. Three (3) teams may advance for Division I
  2. Three (3) teams may advance for Division II
  1. When there are 10-12 teams
  1. Four (4) teams may advance for Division I.
  2. Four (4) teams may advance for Division II.
  1. When there are 13-15 teams
  1. Five (5) teams may advance for Division I
  2. Five (5) teams may advance for Division II.
  1. When there are 16-18 teams
  1. Six (6) teams may advance for Division I.
  2. Six (6) teams may advance for Division II.
  1. When there are 19-21 teams
  1. Seven (7) teams may advance for Division I.
  2. Seven (7) teams may advance for Division II
  1. The District Sport Director and/or the National Chair may each name one additional increment of 3, starting with 22 teams.
  1. Teams that finish in 5th Place or lower which qualify for Division I may choose to use their bid for either Division I or Division II or both.
  1. EXCEPTIONS: In the 2nd grade, 3rd grade and 12th Grade Division all teams are eligible to compete in the National Championship.

Club Program/Automatic Entry

A club will receive one automatic entry (for the following year) for every four (4) teams entered into National Championship events (combined total for Division I and II). The entry may be used for any age/grade division for either Division I or II.
