Assessment Checklist for

Geologic Time 01: Geologic Time Scale

**After finishing each section, put a check mark next to it so you know each section was completed**

_____ Click on the Apply Tab and read through the Objectives, Introduction, Materials, Procedure, and

Reflection Questions Tab before getting started

_____ Gather the list of materials (if you can’t find adding machine tape just cut plain paper into stripes

About 5 centimeters wide and tape the stripes together for a length of 4.6 meters long)

Note: You may also create a digital time scale using a word-processing or spreadsheet program of your choice. Choose this option if you do not have access to a digital camera.

_____ Determine an appropriate scale for placing the geologic time scale of 4.6 billion years (4,600

million) on the piece of adding-machine tape. If you need help creating the scale, try the scale calculator.

_____ Plot each era and period on the paper using the scale you chose from your calculations

_____ Make notes on the paper about significant events that occurred during that time (events can be

biological or geological in nature)

_____ Answer the reflection questions below and submit your answers to your instructor

1. What scale did you use to make your model?

2. How did you decide to use this scale? Show your calculations.

3. Based on the scale you used, how long (in centimeters) was the Precambrian period compared to the rest of the scale?

4. How many “centimeters” of time separated the dinosaurs and humans on Earth?

5. Were you surprised by the length of the time scale when you saw it on a continuous strip of paper? Why or why not? Explain your answer as it relates to the scope of Earth’s geologic past.

_____ Submit a representation of your geologic time scale by using one of the following methods:

1. Take a digital image of your time scale model.

2. Use a word-processing or spreadsheet program to create a digital model of your time scale. (Use as many “pages” as you need.)

3. Consult your teacher if you have any other ideas for submitting evidence of your work.

_____ Attach the document to assessment and submit
