New Optometry Course Deakin University

Optometrists are expert in nearly all things concerning the eyes and visual system and can work in a variety of settings. Most optometrists (around 75%) work in private practice – which itself can be very diverse. On a given day, an Australian optometrist may perform a primary visual assessment, treat advanced eye disease and dispense both prescription medicines and optical aids. As such, optometrists share traits with general practitioners, ophthalmologists, and pharmacists. At the same time, most optometrists are business owners and retailers - as approximately 80% of total revenues are generated through dispensing.

Deakin University will be introducing a Bachelor of Vision Science and Master of Optometry commencing in 2012.

The course will be divided up as follows:

·  three trimesters of prevocational studies

·  five trimesters of optometric case-based learning and Team-Based Learning integrating health, science and clinical optometry practice (i.e. three in the Bachelor of Vision Science plus two in the Master of Optometry) and

·  two trimesters of workplace-based clinical placements

The prerequisite for entry is VCE units 3 and 4 with a study score of 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. Students are not required to complete the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT).

To apply students need to apply using the VTAC code 15541. Student selection will be based on ATAR score and middle-band criteria weighted towards the Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) where applicable. This course will only be on offer to International students from 2013.

Career as a Veterinarian

Veterinarians look after the health and well-being of animals. They diagnose, treat and help prevent disease and injury in animals. Most vets concentrate on at least one field such as small animals, horses, or livestock. Many also focus on special interests within these fields, such as surgery, medicine and dentistry. Vets need to keep their skills up-to-date with the latest clinical and scientific developments through continuing education activities.

A veterinary science degree takes around five or six years of study, depending on the university. A veterinary science course can be demanding, but if students are highly motivated, have an interest in science and care about the health and welfare of animals, it may be the course for you.

On graduation, students will need to register with the veterinary registration board in any state they will practice in. Registration with the board is the official licence to practice veterinary medicine in that state.

Australia has seven universities offering undergraduate veterinary science courses. These include:

·  Charles Sturt University (Wagga Wagga NSW)

·  James Cook University (Townsville Queensland)

·  Murdoch University (Perth WA)

·  University of Adelaide

·  University of Melbourne

·  University of Queensland

·  University of Sydney

Other universities also offer veterinary courses, but attending one of these may require more time or further studies to obtain an actual veterinary degree. Find out more by visiting http://www.ava.com.au/.
