HAVE FUN IN THE KITCHEN, LEARN THE SECRETS OF FRENCH COOKING DURING A GETAWAY TO OSTHOFF RESORT

ELKHART LAKE, WISCONSIN – Say goodbye to that bread machine and hello to all you “knead” to know about baking. Artisanal French breads and rolls are featured among the spring cooking classes at Jill Prescott’s highly regarded (and highly popular) French cooking school at the Osthoff Resort at Elkhart Lake.

The historic resort (dating back to 1886) is a popular getaway spot tucked among the beautiful, rolling terrain of the Kettle Moraine Forest in southeastern Wisconsin. In addition to the culinary school, the Osthoff is nationally known for its state-of-the-art destination spa, Aspira, and for its well-regarded casual fine dining restaurant, Lola’s on the Lake, which specializes in regional cuisine that incorporates local organic ingredients.

Jill Prescott is a cookbook author and host of the popular PBS cooking series, Jill Prescott’s Ecole de Cuisine. She is founder of one of the first authentic French-style cooking schools for home chefs in the United States.

Classically trained in French cooking, Prescott earned diplomas from the prestigious culinary schools of Paris. Having spent 20 years working hand-in-hand with artisans around the world to bring authenticity to her culinary programs, Prescott now shares her skills and knowledge with guests at The Osthoff.

“Jill Prescott provides an authentic French learning experience,” notes Osthoff general manager, Lola Roeh. “The culinary experiences gained at classes attended during a stay at the resort can provide memories and culinary skills that last a lifetime.”

Single and multi-day courses are scheduled year-round and span such topics as soups and sauces, pastries, artisan breads, grilling and, of course, the art of working with chocolate. You’ll find workshops of three-to-four-hours on such basics as knife skills as well as a weeklong introduction to “French Bistro” cooking.

There are plenty of fun subjects, too, such as preparing “The Perfect Breakfast,” making “Bistro Desserts” (including French chocolate truffles) and creating “Celebration Cakes” for the next time that your family celebrates a birthday, anniversary or other significant event. Check these and other tempting topics by requesting from the Osthoff Resort a copy of the course schedule for Jill Prescott’s Ecole le Cuisine (or view the line-up by visiting the resort’s Web site).

Classes run year-round with five-day courses providing an absorbing introduction to “Classic French Cuisine” (March 10-14) and the companion “French Pastry & Classic Desserts” (March 17-21). Weekend courses include “Artisan Breads, Dinner & Cinnamon Rolls” (Mar. 28-30) and “French Bistro” cooking (Apr. 4-6). One-day courses lasting five-to-six hours feature: “Introduction to French Cuisine,” “Chef’s Choice Cooking Class,” “Seafood,” “French Chocolate Truffles,” “Pasta & Pasta Sauces” and “Foie Gras & Duck.” Workshops of one-to-four hours’ duration include: “The Perfect Breakfast” and “Food & Wine Pairing.” Should you have only an hour or so to spare during your visit to the resort, acquaint yourself with Jill Prescott by joining one of her wine tasting seminars.

The Osthoff Resort offers 245 spacious suites and guestrooms. One-, two- and three-bedroom suites range in size up to 2,300 square feet and feature a kitchen or kitchenette, dining and living room, TV, fireplace and private balcony. Guestrooms feature a king-size bed, private balcony, two-person whirlpool bath, wet bar and TV.

The Osthoff Resort is just an hour north of Milwaukee, less than two hours from Madison and about three hours from Chicago. For more information contact The Osthoff Resort, 101 Osthoff Avenue, Elkhart Lake, WI 53020-0151, 800-876-3399—or check the Web site at www.osthoff.com.
