Montalvo Announces 2011 Summer Camps
Nearly 30 Music, Visual and Performing Arts Camps Offered
For Kids of All Ages
New String Instrument Camps offered in partnership with
San Jose Chamber Orchestra
SARATOGA, Calif. – This summer, Montalvo Arts Center presents an impressive range of stimulating arts camps for children ages six to 18. From hands-on art classes, to spy camp, performing arts and the brand-new stringed instrument camps, Montalvo is the place to be for kids this summer. Registration is available to the general public starting February 25 and available to Montalvo Members starting February 10. Interested parents can learn more about membership and register for camps through the Montalvo Box Office. Beginning February 25, Montalvo will offer parents online registration for all camps.
In the summer of 2010, Montalvo greatly expanded its camp offerings and increased child participation by 450 percent – an impressive response to the organization’s pledge to offer relevant programs that enrich and engage children’s lives. The initiative continues this summer with eight weeks of exciting camps in the visual arts, such as Printmaking, Meet the Masters and Walkabout; performing and theatre arts, like B is for Broadway and the ever-popular Missoula Children’s Theatre; and a unique Chamber String Program in partnership with the San Jose Chamber Orchestra.
Under the leadership of the distinguished Barbara Day Turner, Montalvo and SJCO offer two string camps: Preparatory String Orchestra camp for students 6-11 focuses on polishing playing skills, creative composition workshops and musical games; and the Chamber Orchestra camp for ages 12-18, where students will learn contemporary styles in string playing while studying classical and new chamber music works. Students will engage in sessions in alternate styles, such as jazz and tango, and will also interact with composers to create a new piece that will be performed at the end of the week.
“I would like to personally invite all families in the South Bay Area to join us at Montalvo this summer for fun, inspiring visual and performing arts camps that can’t be found anywhere else,” said Executive Director Angela McConnell. “We are also happy to announce we are offering online registration for the first time this year – we know this is something parents will find very useful and convenient.”
