SECTION 223400 - FUEL-FIRED, DOMESTIC-WATER HEATERS

1.1  RELATED DOCUMENTS

Retain or delete this article in all Sections of Project Manual.

1.2  SUMMARY

1.3  PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

Retain paragraph below with "Seismic Qualification Certificates" Paragraph in "Informational Submittals" Article for projects requiring seismic design. Model building codes and ASCE/SEI7 establish criteria for buildings subject to earthquake motions. Verify requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

  1. Seismic Performance: Commercial domestic-water heaters shall withstand the effects of earthquake motions determined according to [ASCE/SEI7] <Insert requirement>.

Retain subparagraph below to define the term "withstand" as it applies to this Project. Definition varies with type of building and occupancy and is critical to valid certification. Option is used for essential facilities where equipment must operate immediately after an earthquake.

  1. The term "withstand" means "the unit will remain in place without separation of any parts from the device when subjected to the seismic forces specified[and the unit will be fully operational after the seismic event]."

1.4  ACTION SUBMITTALS

  1. Product Data: For each type and size of domestic-water heater indicated.[$ds~Include rated capacities, operating characteristics, electrical characteristics, and furnished specialties and accessories.]

Retain first paragraph below and "ASHRAE/IESNA90.1 Compliance" Paragraph in "Quality Assurance" Article if required for fuel-fired, domestic-water heaters.

  1. LEED Submittals:

Retain "Product Data for PrerequisiteEA2" Subparagraph below which sets minimum levels of energy efficiency for service water heating equipment.

  1. Product Data for PrerequisiteEA2: Documentation indicating that units comply with applicable requirements in ASHRAE/IESNA90.1, Section7, "Service Water Heating."

Retain first paragraph below for domestic-water heaters that require electrical power.

  1. Shop Drawings:
  2. Wiring Diagrams: For power, signal, and control wiring.

1.5  INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

Retain first paragraph below if required by seismic criteria applicable to Project. Coordinate with Sections specifying mechanical vibration, supports, and seismic controls. See ASCE/SEI7 for certification requirements for equipment and components.

  1. Seismic Qualification Certificates: For fuel-fired, domestic-water heaters, accessories, and components, from manufacturer.
  2. Basis for Certification: Indicate whether withstand certification is based on actual test of assembled components or on calculation.
  3. Dimensioned Outline Drawings of Equipment Unit: Identify center of gravity and locate and describe mounting and anchorage provisions.
  4. Detailed description of equipment anchorage devices on which the certification is based and their installation requirements.

Retain first paragraph below for product certificates from manufacturers.

  1. Product Certificates: For each type of [commercial, gas-fired,] [gas-fired, tankless,] [residential, gas-fired,] [commercial, oil-fired,] [residential, oil-fired,] [and] [commercial, gas- and oil-fired,] domestic-water heater, from manufacturer.

Retain first paragraph below if plumbing codes for Project area require domestic-water heaters to be independent-testing-agency certified. Verify availability for units retained.

  1. Domestic-Water Heater Labeling: Certified and labeled by testing agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.
  2. Source quality-control reports.
  3. Field quality-control reports.
  4. Warranty: Sample of special warranty.

1.6  CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

  1. Operation and Maintenance Data: For fuel-fired, domestic-water heaters to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals.

1.7  QUALITY ASSURANCE

  1. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.

Compliance with ASHRAE/IESNA90.1 may be required even when not applying for LEED certification. Retain "ASHRAE/IESNA Compliance" Paragraph below if required for LEEDPrerequisiteEA2, which requires that domestic-water heaters comply with ASHRAE/IESNA90.1, including equipment efficiency indicated in its table titled "Performance Requirements for Water Heating Equipment."

  1. ASHRAE/IESNA Compliance: Fabricate and label fuel-fired, domestic-water heaters to comply with ASHRAE/IESNA90.1.
  2. ASME Compliance:
  3. Where ASME-code construction is indicated, fabricate and label commercial, domestic-water heater storage tanks to comply with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: SectionVIII, Division1.
  4. Where ASME-code construction is indicated, fabricate and label commercial, finned-tube, domestic-water heaters to comply with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: SectionIV.
  5. NSF Compliance: Fabricate and label equipment components that will be in contact with potable water to comply with NSF61, "Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects."

1.8  COORDINATION

  1. Coordinate sizes and locations of concrete bases with actual equipment provided.

1.9  WARRANTY

When warranties are required, verify with Owner's counsel that special warranties stated in this article are not less than remedies available to Owner under prevailing local laws.

  1. Special Warranty: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of fuel-fired, domestic-water heaters that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.
  2. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following:
  3. Structural failures including storage tank and supports.
  4. Faulty operation of controls.
  5. Deterioration of metals, metal finishes, and other materials beyond normal use.

Verify available warranties and warranty periods for units and components with manufacturers listed in Part2 articles.

2.1  COMMERCIAL, GAS-Fired, STORAGE, domestic-WATER HEATERS

  1. Commercial, Atmospheric, Gas-Fired, Storage, Domestic-Water Heaters:

Retain option in first subparagraph below if manufacturer's name and model number are indicated in schedules or plans on Drawings; delete option and insert manufacturer's name and model number if not included on Drawings.

  1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Bradford White Corporation; <Insert product name or designation or comparable product by one of the following:

  2. Temperature Control: Adjustable thermostat.
  3. Safety Controls: Automatic, high-temperature-limit and low-water cutoff devices or systems.
  4. Combination Temperature-and-Pressure Relief Valves: ANSIZ21.22/CSA4.4-M. Include one or more relief valves with total relieving capacity at least as great as heat input, and include pressure setting of 150 psig (1035 kPa). Select one relief valve with sensing element that extends into storage tank.

Retain first subparagraph below if domestic-water heater is required for foodservice equipment. Verify that NSF compliance is available for selected domestic-water heater.

  1. Special Requirements: NSF5 construction.
  2. Draft Hood: Draft diverter, complying with ANSIZ21.12.

Automatic dampers in subparagraph below are used, but not required, downstream of water heater draft hoods to shut off the venting system when the water heater is in standby or not in operation. Verify availability for model selected.
