COURSE DESCRIPTION

University Administrators are being asked to judiciously manage dwindling financial resources and to be more accountable for the allocations they receive. This course will encourage administrators to become better informed decision-makers and managers by providing the tools to prepare and deal confidently with budgets and financial projections.

FORMAT and DURATION

This fully online, asynchronous course is offered over a three-week period to enable working professionals to participate.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the program, participants will have a better understanding of:

· The financial structure of universities.

· The resource allocation process and various budget allocation techniques.

· Budget preparation and submission.

· Budget policies and financial projections.

INSTRUCTOR
Denis Berube recently received a Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Association of University Business Officers for his 32 years of service in senior financial positions in various universities. His last position was Assistant Vice-President Administration and Ancillaries at Simon Fraser University. Denis received a B. Comm. from Sir George Williams University (now Concordia) and is a Certified Management Accountant. Prior to joining SFU in 1991 he was Comptroller at Brandon University, and from 1984 – 1988 held the position of Bursar at the University of Swaziland. He has been an instructor with CHERD for 20 years and is a member of the Leadership Development program of the Association of African Universities. He has conducted workshops on financial management and budgeting for university administrators in Canada, Mexico, Africa, and Asia.
