Final Feliz Global Giving Grant Proposal
The Final Feliz Community Project, (RJ), was founded in July 2001 by Winton Moreno, who at the time was just a citizen of the Final Feliz community working as a security guard at a health insurance company. Moreno observed the children in his community hanging around without organized activities. This worried him; a lack of activities could lead to delinquent behaviors. Moreno´s conscience would not allow him to just stand by and watch these children’s futures waste away. The Final Feliz Community Project was born using his own 13th monthly salary to cover the costs. Moreno began to offer reading and writing classes in an open field behind his house to 11 neighborhood kids. He also began organizing recreational activities. His backyard became a safe place where the children could play, dance around and work on acrobatics. He was soon forced to open his kitchen and living room for study, music and dance while the circus activities remained in the backyard. In less than a month, the waiting list for children wanting to participate in the program contained more than 40 children.
Final Feliz now accommodates the participation of more than 150 children and offers them activities and meals 6 days a week with additional activities for families (support groups for parental involvement, etc) in the evenings. On Saturdays, children and their families meet together with educators to discuss their growth, individual needs and the program activities in general. He has also helped to start similar programs in 2 other favela communities.
With the strength of sheer will and the help of a few friends, one man is able to change the lives of many. Final Feliz has never had a sponsor and everyone involved has been a volunteer from the community, including Moreno himself, who was unable to hold onto his security guard job due to the amount of time his social project entailed. All his time and all of his money was, and is until today, spent on the programs, materials, food, uniforms and the construction of a functional dance studio for Final Feliz.
The goals of the Final Feliz Project are to keep the project within the community, run by community people, to prepare the adults to be educators and role models, to prepare their students to take the role of monitors and help others in the community and to form conscientious citizens who can play an active role in society.
In a short time Final Feliz has established strong relations with other like minded NGO’s and organizations, such as FASE, CIC, Sebrae, Sub Prefeitura da Zona Norte, Colcha de Retalhos. Now, with the assistance of Dreams Can Be, they are part of Cirque du Soleil’s Cirque du Monde network.
Today, with the financial assistance of Dreams Can Be, Moreno’s Final Feliz has matured a great deal. Recent additions to the Final Feliz spread include a classroom and a gymnasium built on an adjoining lot. Dreams Can Be’s investment in Final Feliz has facilitated salaries for its program monitors and a basic lunch for the children served daily. Also, Moreno has started this same project in two other neighborhoods. Final Feliz is currently serving 350 children with less than US$400.00 a month! Several months ago when Moreno found himself in need of psychological services for some of his children he took the kids in this program who have been trained in Capoeira (a traditional form of Brazilian dance and martial arts) to a program for wheelchair bound adolescents. They now teach these handicapped children Capoeira in exchange for free psychological services for the children of Final Feliz. Now that is what we call a Happy Ending.

Projects need and beneficiaries
Although void of drug-trafficking, the community is affected by truancy and absent parents. The Happy Ending project uses social activities to aid 150 children and youth ages 2-21 daily in becoming responsible citizens. The project also targets parents helping them become more conscientious of their parenting methods. These transformations benefit the community by strengthening families and promoting cultural education. More circus equipment is needed to better serve the community.
We are seeking money for salaries for our monitors, from the Global Giving employees to supplement the money that we are currently receiving from Dreams Can Be Foundation. We would like to pay each of the 9 monitors from the community a minimum wage salary.
Project Activities
The project uses elements of social circus such as acrobatics and clowning to engage participants in activities that remove them from a cycle of truancy. Participants also perform and attend cultural events both inside and outside of their community.
Project Expected Outcomes
The project aims to fortify families and reduce truancy rates by offering structured social circus activities and classes that will help build more than 150 participants’ self-esteem making them better citizens and more dedicated students.

Organization Mission
Happy Ending Cultural Association attends to the needs of children and adolescents ages 2-21 by providing and realizing cultural activities, by strengthening familial relationships between these children and youth and their families and by promoting a sense of cultural unity in the community.
Organization programs and activities
Happy Ending offers training in various mediums of social circus including but not limited to acrobatics, balance, contortion and clowning. They also work to reunite families and offer supplementary educational activities for kids and parents.
