Figurative Language Assignment (Tangerine)

From the list of remaining page numbers, choose TWO different kinds of figurative language to discuss, for example, a metaphor and personification. Each answer will be in paragraph form. A double-spaced, typed copy will be turned in Monday; however, a neatly handwritten copy will be acceptable.

1. For simile or metaphor:

a. Identify the figurative language and explain what two things are being compared.

a. Identify the personification and explain what is being personified – what human quality

is attributed to what object.

b. Explain what this is intended to point out.

c. Explain what this suggests or reveals about the plot, a character, or the author’s

attitude.

3. For idiom:

a. Identify and explain the idiom –its meaning.

b. Explain what it suggests, reveals, or foreshadows about the plot, a character, or the

author’s attitude/feelings.

c. End the paragraph by answering the following question: Is the idiom effective? Why

or why not?

4. For Imagery:

a. Identify briefly what is being described.

b. Point out some strong, vivid words that contribute to the imagery.

c. Explain what the imagery suggests, reveals, or foreshadows about the plot, a character,

or the author’s attitude/feelings.

d. End the paragraph by answering the following question: Is the imagery effective?
