Faculty Summer Teaching Loads

Summer session at Northern Arizona University receives no state funds. Faculty contracts normally cover the academic year. Hence, academic-year faculty who choose to teach in the summer receive additional remuneration for such work. In all cases, a faculty member’s summer teaching load should not be so large that the academic integrity of the classes being taught is compromised. To that end, the following Summer Teaching Load Policy has been developed.

Faculty may teach a maximum of 15 units during the summer session. To teach this maximum load, the teaching load must not exceed the following: 1) three units in the three-week session; 2) six units in the first five-week session, and 3) six units in the second five week session.

Faculty may teach a maximum of 12 units in either the ten-week or the twelve-week or a combination of these two sessions.

Exceptions to the above policy require the approval of the Provost.

NOTE:

For all faculty salary levels a summer teaching load of 15 units exceeds the maximum amount of pay faculty may earn for teaching in summer school. Pay for faculty teaching during summer session cannot exceed the maximum amount allowable by state and university policy. The maximum amount of earnings a faculty member may earn during summer is calculated by dividing the academic year salary by 190 days and then multiplying that number by 70. There are typically 190 work days in an academic year and 70 work days during summer. There are 260 total work days in a calendar year (52 weeks x 5days).

The table on the following page indicates the excess earnings at varying salary levels for faculty who teach 15 hours during summer.
