Sauna Cleaning & Maintenance

The sauna room floor should be wet-mopped on a daily basis. If a hose is used to clean the floor, care must be taken to not soak the wall and bench timbers.

Benches should be wiped with a moist cloth or sponge, using a mild detergent if required. Sauna users should always be required to sit on a towel – never on the bench timber. In this way, body fats and skin oils are prevented from penetrating the bench timbers and maintenance can be kept to a minimum.

If benches are wet after cleaning, the sauna heater should be turned on to dry out the timber. DO NOT leave wet timber in the sauna overnight.

It is extremely dangerous to use eucalyptus or other oils on the sauna heater due to fire risk and the practise must not be permitted.

The sauna heater does not require periodic maintenance.

If water is poured onto the sauna stones, use on tap water for this purpose. Chemically treated pool water is corrosive and will shorten the life of the heater considerably.

Please follow this simple procedure to keep the steam room in a fresh and sanitised condition.

1.  The steam room door should be propped in an open position whenever the steam room is not in use in order facilitate airing of the room

2.  The steam room floor and the tops and undersides of the benches must be hosed off thoroughly with good water pressure on a daily basis

3.  The steam room floor must be scrubbed once every week. Give particular attention to corners and all floor and wall junctions. If fungus or mould growth is evident, treat wih diluted chlorine bleach solution (20:1)

4.  Do not scrub the walls, ceiling or benches with abrasive material or ANY SOLUTION CONTAINING SOLVENTS OR UREA as this damage the finish. To wash down walls, ceilings and benches, use only a SPONGE and soapy water to which a mild disinfectant and/or bleach has been added.

SAUNA INSTRUCTIONS

1.  Do not touch the top of the sauna heater – will give you a severe burn

2.  Do not cover the sauna heater, create fire

3.  Incorrect ventilation could cause excessive drying of wood hence fire hazard

4.  Cover sauna floor with non-slip material

5.  NEVER hose down the sauna

6.  Sauna doors must always open outwards

7.  Sauna fragrances might ignite if poured undiluted onto stone compartment

Sauna stones: use only stones of the dolerite type. Fill around the element. Fill approx 50mm above. Never place stones above side air chambers.

Check stones compartment at least once per year. See page 7 of manual. Remove all stones from compartment. Clean any small stones grit, gravel, and chalky deposits from the bottom of the stone compartment. Use only stones which are whole and intact.

Temperature Limit Control: built into the terminal box on the heater, activated automatically when risk of overheating.

Built in Humidifier: fill the built in reservoir with water before turning on the sauna.

Sprinkler water on the stones: must always be done with a ladle onto the stones , never with a hose or bucket. Note: the stones must be hot.

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SAUNA

·  Always shower before going into a sauna

·  Take a towel with you to sit on. Stay inside the sauna only as long as it feels pleasant.

·  Show consideration to other bathers. Do not set the temperature higher than is pleasant for all those using the sauna.

·  Young children love saunas. Let them splash about in a tub of water on the floor or on the lower benches where it is somewhat cooler. Remember to keep an eye on them at all times.

·  Round off the sauna with a long, cool shower

·  Never get dressed right after a sauna. This will only cause you to perspire. Relax and treat yourself to a cold drink and enjoy a sensation of true well-being. Don’t get dressed until your body has cooled down and your pores have closed again.

Dry and Wet Saunas

In DRY saunas, where the stones are not sprinkled with water, the relative humidity

(RH)is as low as 5-10%

In WET saunas when water is ladled on the hot stones from time to time, the relative

Humidly rises steeply to 10-25% and you can feel how the quivering waves of heat massage their way into your skin
