9th Boulder Asian Film Festival September 6, 8 – 10 at Dairy Center

Colorado Showcase features Wendy Woo show & four Boulder movies

The 9th annual Boulder Asian Film features 78 movies, documentaries and animations from all corners of the globe at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street in boulder Colorado.

“We’re showing movies from Japan, India, New Zealand, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, South Korea, France, England and from the U.S.,” BAFF coordinator Alan O’Hashi said. “We’re pleased that Wendy Woo is supporting us with a show on Friday Sept. 8th.”

BAFF is dedicated to giving Asian producers, directors screenwriters, photographers a place to have their projects see the light of day. We're also interested in Asian subject matter, characters and motifs.

The Best Shorts screen on Saturday evening. “Ruckus” director Dean Ishida plans to be in attendance. The Short Showcase also includes a performance by Japanese drum group Mirai Daiko.

The Boulder-originating movies are three documentaries and a short which screen on Sunday afternoon, September 10th.

Sand Mandala

The making of sand mandalas in Bhutanese monasteries is an ancient and secretly practiced ritual which has only recently been unveiled in the US. This documentary traces the construction and dispersal of a beautiful sand mandala built in the image of Chenrezig, Buddha of compassion. Includes original music and images from Bhutan.

Seventy-three year old Chandra Maya, like so many other aging Nepalese, has gone completely blind due to cataracts. This film follows her journey to a remote village where surgeons from Nepal and the US are making a difference.

A Little Bit of Discipline was one of the top three screenplays from the 2005 competition. Kenji seeks his Uncle Seito’s approval for his Caucasian girlfriend a few years after World War II in a rural Wyoming community, also the site of a Japanese relocation camp.

There will be a cost to attend the festival this year. Each two-hour session will be $6.00 which can be purchased through the Dairy Center and at their box office. The Sept. 6 reception at the Boulder International Film Festival and BTV-54 1426 Pearl Street is by a suggested donation of $10.00 for drinks and food!
