Amite- District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux reports that 32-year-old Shermaine Smith of Amite, LA, pleaded no contest to resisting an officer, attempted second degree murder, and simple burglary.
According to police reports, on November 4, 2012, Shermaine Smith accompanied by several others entered onto private property and burglarized a Hammond residence. After removing several articles of property from the residence, Smith’s accomplices took the vehicle at the residence to a secluded residential area in independence where it was burned. A warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest.
In an unrelated incident, on June 27, 2016 a male stated that he got into an altercation with two males. After the altercation he proceeded to go back to his residence when the two males fired shots at him hitting him five times. The male stated that he ran and got into his vehicle and drove himself to the hospital in Amite, LA. In written and recorded statements the victim identified Shermaine Smith as one of the males who shot him. Smith was arrested and charged with attempted murder on July 23, 2016.
Shermaine Smith was sentenced to 10 years with the department of corrections. The sentence is to be served without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
Assistant District Attorney Matthew Belser represented the state; Judge Robert Morrison handed down the sentence.
