Extended Activity: “The Most Dangerous Game,” Richard Connell

Directions: Pick one activity and complete it. Due Monday 9/20. You may work independently OR in groups of 2-3. You must email me a status update on your project near the end of class on both Thursday and Friday... send me what you have, and any questions/problems that arise, I can help you via email!

  1. Create a detailed map of Ship-Trap Island. Include on your map: place where Rainsford landed; Zaroff’s chateau, Rainsford’s route around the island, Death Swamp and its quicksand.

2.  Create some illustrations to go along with the short story. Use any medium you wish for your artwork. Be sure that your illustrations reflect the mood of the story.

3.  Write a horror story from the perspective of one of the ill-fated sailors who falls prey to Zaroff. Pay particular attention to “mood” as you write your tale of suspense.

4.  Create a comic book version of the story

5.  Create a travel-type brochure of the island. Focus on setting.

6.  Richard Connell began his career working for the school newspaper. Write a newspaper article that details Rainsford’s experience on Ship-Trap Island.

7.  Write a scripted scene for one of the story’s scenes, and then act it out (in class next week).

8.  Compose a short piece of music – a score for one of the scenes.

9.  Create a playlist of music that would be in either Zaroff OR Rainsford’s ipod, if they had one. You must also explain each song selection – why did you choose it, and why does it fit? During what part of the story would they be listening to each song? – 8 or more songs please, for a playlist.

Be creative. Use the technology! There are many resources available to you online to help in your creation. You will present something next week to the class.

If you choose to work in groups, you must get to a point by Friday where you assign independent tasks to one another over the weekend – exchange emails, etc. Also, you will be reporting to me on the work habits of each of your group members. Pull your own weight.
