PROCEDURE:

*1.What is abstract art. Definitions of abstract are:

Abstract: to remove, reduce, or summarize. Dictionary

Abstract: in sculpture, emphasizing a derived essential character having little visual reference to objects in nature. Art definition.

The most important element in sculpture is space. Positive and negative space are essential in developing any sculpture. All other elements and principles involved are applied after space is established. The element usually developed from this process is form.

*2.Project Preparation

Each student will need a small paper or plastic container. An extremely small amount of color pigment is poured into the container. A mixture of plaster is poured into the container and let to dry and harden for at least 24 hours. The container is removed, leaving the plaster. The color used should produce a marble imitation when carved. Color pigment is optional. The plaster may be left white. If a solid color is desired, the pigment must be stirred to create a solid hue.

*3.Plaster carving

Before carving, each student must present a series of drawings. These drawing must be completed the following way:

1.Abstract basic textures, form, space—minimizing detail of paper or fabric

2. Abstract action or the idea of action of an object -- Brancusi

3.Abstraction of the human form, i.e. Henry Moore, Umberto Boccioni,

After completion of the sculpture the student must construct a pedestal for the sculpture. Varnish can be applied to enhance the surface.

4.Writing Assignment

When the project is due, each student must have completed the writing assignment--see No.3 objective.

B.OBJECTIVES:

1.The student will develop an understanding of abstraction, through carving organic forms. The student will attempt to replicate the style of Henry Moore.

2.The student will apply knowledge of elements and principles to the level of students ability.

3.The student will complete a plaster sculpture with a writing assignment that answers the following questions.

a. What the sculpture was created and abstracted from?

b. Your composition, the use of movement, balance, space and texture in the sculpture?
