A Message From The Principal
Dear Parents and Students of Exeter Union High School,
Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year at Exeter Union High School. We look forward to an exciting year filled with much learning and many memorable moments. This year we begin our transition to a six period day. In addition, every Wednesday will be a late start for students, with school beginning at 8:55 (warning bell ringing at 8:50) rather than the regular day start of 7:55 (warning bell ringing at 7:50). These late start days will provide professional development opportunities for teachers. Teachers will be looking at students’ data/results and having discussions and planning opportunities with colleagues as a means of addressing the various academic needs of all students.
For the purpose of maintaining and further developing the safety and well being of all students and staff, we will open two designated gates for entrance and exit of the campus. Those gates are the large rolling gates next to the band room off of San Juan Ave (north side of campus), and the other which is located west of the Smith gym, directly north of the student parking lot off of Rocky Hill Dr. This change will also assist with supervision of students leaving and entering the campus. As usual, all other visits to the school during the day need to be made through the office.
I would like to cordially invite all parents and family members to be a part of your student’s education. I know that behind every successful high school student are many caring and involved family members. Throughout the year you will receive a newsletter highlighting special events and upcoming opportunities. Communication is a vital component of student success; therefore opportunities to share and discuss your student’s academic performance will be a priority. As will opportunities to share concerns or ideas for improving the work we do.
We are continuing with our high academic expectations for all students. I believe our students can meet all grade level standards as set by Exeter Public Schools and the state of California. It is our goal to prepare all students with the academic knowledge necessary to be successful throughout school and in life.
The staff is committed to provide a safe and secure learning environment at Exeter Union High School. We have a well-designed Discipline Plan that clearly outlines what is expected at our school. Our plan includes a consistent system of choices and consequences that are designed to assist our students in making good life choices which contribute to making our students successful. Please refer to the Student/Parent Handbook for additional information.
If we can be of any assistance to your student, please don’t hesitate to give us a call, or come by and see us. We want this school year to be a wonderful one for you and your student.
Sincerely,
Frank Silveira

The Importance of Regular Attendance
EUHS Attendance Office Phone Number 559-2127 x210
Absences
For accounting purposes, there is no such thing as an excused absence. It is vitally important that students be in class unless they are ill. It is important not to remove students for vacation trips or other non-essential reasons. Compulsory attendance laws require that we verify reasons for all student absences. The State of California considers any student absent 4 or more times per year to be a habitual truant.
The reason for an absence must be verified by a note or telephone call from a parent or guardian regardless of the age of the student. Students, 18 years old or more and who do not live with a parent may verify their own absence. The attendance office telephone number is available for messages 24 hours a day. Parents are encouraged to telephone the attendance office and verify absence reasons by leaving a recorded message. A student will have two days to verify their absence. All unverified absences are considered unexcused and will accrue toward truancy. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any school work missed as a result of absence.
Absence due to a student's involvement in a school related activity at which school personnel are present, is not considered absent by the state for accounting purposes, but is considered absent from individual classes. It is the student's responsibility to make up any work missed as a result of absence. Please call our office (592-2127 x210) BEFORE 9:30 AM to request make-up class work. Make-up class work for excused absences is permitted only with teacher approval. For each day of excused absence, the student will be allowed one day to obtain, complete, and return make-up class work assigned from an excused absence. A student needing additional time to complete make-up class work must obtain teacher approval prior to the extension of time. The maximum time for completing makeup work, regardless of the length of absence, is two weeks.
