Biography

John Nusbaum is the Executive Director, Shared Services and Corporate Responsibility Officer at Ascension Health. Formerly the Senior Vice President for the Division for Ascension Health, Mr. Nusbaum served as the transition manager during the formative period of the organization. His current responsibilities include leading the Shared Services Unit and serving as the Corporate Responsibility Officer for Ascension Health.

Mr. Nusbaum received a Bachelor’s degree from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich., in 1970. He holds three post-graduate degrees. Mr. Nusbaum received a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 1972; a Master’s degree in Counseling and Personnel from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1974; and a Master of Public Health Administration from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1982.

Prior to joining Ascension Health, Mr. Nusbaum served as Senior Vice President for the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System from 1983 to 1999. Mr. Nusbaum helped establish the system in 1983. As senior vice president, he served as project manager during formation of Ascension Health. During his time with the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System, Mr. Nusbaum was the strategic thought leadership/governance liaison for the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System. In addition, he led all shared services under the Sisters of St. Joseph Health System including Risk and IT.

Until 1983, Mr. Nusbaum worked for Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, Mich., as the administrator and chief executive officer (CEO). During this time, he oversaw hospital expansion; overcame a unionization effort through successful NLRB vote against a bargaining unit; assisted in the creation of the United Way Agency for Cass County; authored major federal grants; and expanded the hospital’s medical staff.

Prior to Lee Memorial Hospital, Mr. Nusbaum worked as Director for Ambulatory Care at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. He served in this capacity from 1975 to 1977, in which time he oversaw major facility expansion and renovation; provided administrative support for cardiac and family practice residency programs; and led in the creation of Kalamazoo’s first Advanced Paramedic Program through the Kalamazoo Fire Department.

Mr. Nusbaum currently serves as a Diplomat of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
