WHO IS JESUS CHRIST?

Professor Simon Greenleaf was one of the most eminent lawyers of all time. His “Laws of Evidence” for many years were accepted by all States in the United States as the standard methodology for evaluating cases. He was teaching law at a university in the United States when one of his students asked Professor Greenleaf if he would apply his “Laws of Evidence” to evaluate an historical figure. When Greenleaf agreed to the project he asked the student who was to be the subject of the review. The student replied that the person to be examined would be Jesus Christ. Professor Greenleaf agreed to undertake the examination of Jesus Christ and as a result, when he had finished the review, Simon Greenleaf personally accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his Saviour.

Professor Greenleaf then sent an open letter to all jurists in the United States saying in part “I personally have investigated one called Jesus Christ. I have found the evidence concerning him to be historically accurate. I have also discovered that Jesus Christ is more than a human being, he is either God or nothing and having examined the evidence it is impossible to conclude other than he is God. Having concluded that he is God I have accepted him as my personal Saviour. I urge all members of the legal profession to use the “Laws of Evidence” to investigate the person of the Lord Jesus Christ and if you find that he is wrong expose him as a faker but if not consider him as your Saviour and Lord”

HOW CAN I BE SAVED?

Salvation is available for all members of the human race.

Salvation is the most important undertaking in all of God's universe. The salvation of sinners is never on the basis of God's merely passing over or closing His eyes to sin. God saves sinners on a completely righteous basis consistent with the divine holiness of His character. This is called grace. It relies on God so man cannot work for salvation, neither can he deserve it. We need to realise that the creation of this vast unmeasured universe was far less an undertaking than the working out of God's plan to save sinners.

However the acceptance of God's salvation by the sinner is the most simple thing in all of life. One need not be rich, nor wise, nor educated. Age is no barrier nor the colour of one's skin. The reception of the enormous benefits of God's redemption is based upon the simplest of terms so that there is no one in all this wide universe who need be turned away.

How do I become a Christian?

There is but one simple step divided into three parts. First of all I have to recognise that I am a sinner (Romans 3:23; 6:23; Ezekiel 18:4; John 5:24).

Secondly, realising that if I want a relationship with Almighty God who is perfect, and recognising that I am not perfect, I need to look to the Lord Jesus Christ as the only Saviour (I Corinthians 15:3; 1 Peter 2:24; lsaiah 53:6; John 3:16).

Thirdly, by the exercise of my own free will I personally receive the Lord Jesus Christ as my Saviour, believing that He died personally for me and that He is what He claims to be in an individual, personal and living way (John 1:12; 3:36; Acts 16:31; 4:12).

The results of Salvation

The results of this are unbelievably wonderful:

My sins are taken away (John 1:29),

I possess eternal life now (I John 5:11,12),

I become a new creature in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17),

The Holy Spirit takes up His residence in my life (I Corinthians 6:19),

And I will never perish (John 10:28-30).

This truthfully is life's greatest transaction. This is the goal of all people; this is the ultimate of our existence. We invite and exhort any reader who has not become a Christian by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ to follow these simple instructions and be born again eternally into God's family (Matthew 11:28; John 1:12; Acts 4:12; 16:31).

DOCTRINE INDEX

INTRODUCTION

Zechariah’s was born a priest and became a prophet. He was a contemporary of Haggai, who had a very short recorded ministry from August to December 520 BC, and with him encouraged the Jews to recommence building the Temple. In the Bible there are 28 men who have the name Zechariah. The author of this book is therefore not identifiable. His name means God remembers and the theme of the book is that God has not forgotten His people. It is a book that Jewish Christians love, and gentile believers also need to fall in love with this little book as it speaks of times yet to come. God has still not forgotten his people Israel and they will be picked up again in the Tribulation Period.

Zechariah has returned with the Exiles, and in these visions he sees what God is going to do for them in the future. It is a source of encouragement in time of pressure. In this book the Jewish people have been able to look down the corridors of time and see how their future history is going to work out. We can all see where we are going with God through application of His Word. It does not matter what pressure we are under at the moment, we can look into eternity and see how it is all going to work out. We do not know where the world economy is going to be next year, but we know where we are going to be in eternity. Jesus often quoted Zechariah to his disciples.

THE BOOK OF ZECHARIAH FOCUSES ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, and HIS THEN FUTURE ROLE TO DELIVER HIS PEOPLE ISRAEL.

1. The rider of the red horse – Zechariah 1

2. The wall of fire - Zechariah 2

3. The Branch - Zechariah 3

4. The Lord of the whole earth – Zechariah 4

5. The Branch and the Two crowns – Zechariah 6

6. The King of Palm Sunday – Zechariah 9

7. The betrayed shepherd – Zechariah 11.

8. The one who is pierced – Zechariah 12

9. The smitten one – Zechariah 13

10. The returning one - Zechariah 14

THE FUTURE OF THE JEWS

The world is going to exist even through the events of the Tribulation, even though half of the world's population at that time will be killed. The Millennium will still be established and the Lord will restore creation at the start of it. Zechariah has always confirmed to the Jews that they have a future for their nation. A Jewish Christian can read this book and thank God that the Lord has not finished with Israel.

Saul of Tarsus could write Romans Chapters 10 and 11 in which he is able to thank the Lord that he is not finished with Israel. Many Gentile Christians believe that they have replaced Israel. Zechariah clearly shows that while the gospel message, and the Lord in particular, is a rock of offence to those people, there is a future for Israel. There are many as yet unfulfilled prophecies to Israel even though at this time they are a highly atheistic nation as a whole. The logic of prophetic truth states blintly, if all 100+ prophecies relating to the First Advent were fulfilled literally then, we should expect all the prophetic words relating to the Second Advent to be fulfilled also literally.

There are many prophecies in Zechariah involving the Lord Jesus Christ. It is second only to Isaiah in that regard. There are many prophecies but there are ten pictures or "types" of Messiah here. He is a servant, a branch, the lowly king, a cleansing fountain, humanity, deity, a crowned king, amongst others are described in this book.

Haggai prophesied for two months whilst Zechariah prophesied for two years although chapters 9-14 could have been later. All the dates given by Zechariah are identifiable. It is between 520 and 518 BC. The message and content from chapter 9 contains very accurate prophecies about the Greek invasion, and the textual critics attack it because of this. This section could have been written after the temple was completed, but is prophecy not history (it wasn't written in 300BC!).

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND AND THE WRITING OF THE BOOK

Three dates are given for different sections of the book of Zechariah. The book opens with a date of October 520 BC. In Zechariah 7:1 we have the date of 4th December 518 BC. In Zechariah 9:13 the rest of the prophetic section is dated as 480 BC. 480 BC was a period of great unrest in the world as the Persians were attacking the Greeks.

After the Babylonian Captivity, which commenced in 606/586 BC, about 50,000 Jews returned to the land in 535BC and started to rebuild the temple [Ezra 3:11-13]. After the placing of the foundations and some superstructure, work was suspended because of opposition from the Samaritans [Ezra 4], and was not recommenced until 520 BC. It was eventually completed in 516 BC [Ezra 6:15], some 70 years after the destruction of Solomon’s Temple.

The Persian king who was the contemporary of Zechariah was Darius I [522-486 BC]. At this stage the Persian Empire, which had been started by Cyrus who was noted in the Scriptures as God’s shepherd, was highly civilised and pro Semitic. Over the next 200 years they declined so that by the time Alexander the Great arrived they were decadent.

The return of the Jewish Exiles to the Land was under two leaders, Zerubbabel who was descended from David, and Joshua the High Priest. These men are waved off on their journey by Daniel the prophet, and the people have been spiritually revived in captivity by the work of Jeremiah’s written words and Ezekiel’s prophetic and written ministry.

OVERLAPPING PERIODS OF JUDGMENTS AND THE JEWS

1. There are three overlapping periods of judgements in relation to the Jews in the period between 606 BC and 516 BC.

2. In studying historical books such as Daniel and Zechariah it is important to distinguish between the judgments of Servitude, Captivity, and Desolations.

3. Servitude – because of national sin Judah was brought under servitude to Babylon for 70 years in the third year of Jehoiakim in 606/605 BC. On this occasion Nebuchadnezzar left the city and people undisturbed taking only a few prisoners such as Daniel and his three companions.

4. Captivity – however the people of Judah did not respond to this so in 598/597 BC Nebuchadnezzar was back and deported the mass of the inhabitants to Chaldea. This was the group in which Ezekiel was a member.

5. Desolations – Nebuchadnezzar returned a third time in 589-586 BC and besieged Jerusalem eventually destroying the temple and city and the rest of the inhabitants were removed to Babylon.

6. Both Servitude and Captivity were ended with the decree of Cyrus in 536 BC, permitting the exiles to return but according to Daniel 9:2 it was the seventy years of the Desolations that were the basis of the prophecy of the Seventy weeks. Jeremiah 25:11-15, 29:8-114.

7. The time of the Desolations commenced with the besieging of the city of Jerusalem by the Babylonians which was the 10th day of the 10th month of the 9th year of Zedekiah and terminated on the 24th day of the 9th month of the 2nd year of Darius; a period of exactly 70 Jewish years.

8. It is also of interest that multiples of 70 years particularly 7 times 70 are repeated in relation to God’s relationship with Israel.

[1] The most commonly known is the 70 weeks of years of Daniel 9:24-27.

[2] There were 490 years between the dedication of Solomon’s Temple and that of the Second Temple in 520 BC.

[3] There was also a 490 year period between the entrance into Canaan and the foundation of the kingdom under King Saul.

REFLECTION

The required period by God of 70 years of desolation shows how the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem could be held up for some years after the giving of the edict by Cyrus for the return of the Jews to the Land.

This shows the relationship between God’s dispersion of the Jews and their restoration. It is the existence of a Temple in Jerusalem. There were Jews back in the Land as a national group in 535 BC but no Temple. The Desolations ended in 516 BC. Currently we have had Jews back in the land as a national group since 1948 but no Temple as yet exists. It would appear that the completion of the third Temple will represent the end of the dispersion of the Jews from 70 AD.

MESSAGES OF ZECHARIAH

Zechariah 6:9. "Turn ye to me", is the message. Who is the "me"? - This tells us that it is the branch, the Lord Jesus Christ. We have messages, visions and burdens. It comes down to the simple point of, one Saviour, one hope for the nation. The one is the one who they have pierced. Zechariah 12:10ff.

Zechariah 1:8-21 shows we need to learn the symbols. This was written by a Jew for Jews, with Jewish symbolism that the Jews understood and still do. The imagery is accessible, so do not think it cannot be understood. This is a comfort if you know what he is talking about but confusion if you cannot understand it. When you go through the Hebrew you will find that the KJV records the word order accurately in most places but this does not make for good or simple English.
