Medical Work Experience

· There are 2 options for securing medical work experience in the Belfast Trust. Firstly it is only for students in Year 13 & 14. OPTION 1 -. There will be 4 set dates when the Belfast Trust will be offering 3 days (2 days in June) of work experience for academic year 16/17: 3-5 October, 23-25 January, 21-23 March and 27-28 June. If schools wish to secure medical work experience they must be flexible in releasing students to attend when the timetables are running –this programme includes 1 day of clinical activity. Please advise Charter ASAP of your medical requests. OPTION 2 – Students can secure a medical work experience via a personal sponsor – a ‘pre-arranged’ placement. Charter must be informed so that it can be confirmed and full contact details must be provided. No student can do both. Please note that the medical programmes are only available to students who have not had medical work experience before or likely to in the future (this is across the Health Trusts). Please see enclosed flyer about medical work experience in the Belfast Trust.

· We do not make requests for medical work experience in Northern Health & Social Care Trust, however we must be informed of details of pre-arranged to ensure paper work completion.

· There is only one option for securing medical work experience in the South Eastern Trust and that is attending one of their set dates for work experience, the first date is 1-2 December (with another in March, date tbc). This programme does not include any clinical experience. Students must be in Year 13+ and must have a GCSE profile that will allow a student to apply to a medical school in UK or Ireland - grades to be provided, the Medical Directorate feel that this should be close to 36 points. There are no ‘sponsored or pre-arranged’ placements permitted. Please note that the medical programmes are only available to students who have not had medical work experience before or likely to in the future (this is across the Health Trusts).

· Medicine is not offered at the Southern Trust, they host Medical Symposiums (organised by Trust).

· This is an area of which is oversubscribed; there is no guarantee of a student being placed. Flexibility in dates need to be shown.
