High School Prep (transition from 8th to 9th grade) Program

Dates: Monday, July 30th, 2012 through Friday, August 3rd, 2012 – Instructional Program

Structure:

High School Prep Program is for one week, four hours each day, for a total of 20 student hours. The focus of the High School Prep Program will be on reading, writing, mathematics, cultural experience, and transitioning into high school.

All students must report for the Grade 9 High School Prep Program.

Goals:

·  Develop a school culture with rituals and routines, and begin to personalize the high school environment for students by building relationships between and among students

·  Increased readiness for the reading and writing workshop and problem-based inquiry in mathematics those students will experience in high school.

·  Assess students in math and literacy and plan for supports needed during the school year (as needed).

Instruction: Literacy

The focus for the 120 minute daily literacy instruction will be to build or further develop the habits students will need to be successful in a readers and writers workshop course. Specifically, students will be introduced to classroom libraries and begin to select and read independently each day. They will be introduced to elements of writers’ workshop, and will spend time each day in actual writing activities. They will also be exposed to skills needed for reading non-fiction text, because the content focus will be in social studies, with a unit that looks at immigrant experiences in America.

Instruction: Mathematics

The focus for the 120 minute daily mathematics instruction will be twofold: to introduce students to the problem-solving inquiry model and to review some of the foundational skills needed for Algebra I. As in the literacy instruction, students will begin to develop the habits of mind they will need to problem solve and show evidence of their thinking. For example, students will begin to keep math journals to explain how they approach key problems. The math content will focus on an introduction to data, which is the first unit students will experience in Algebra I.

Cultural Activity

The cultural activity will be scheduled on Friday at the end of the week. A summer cultural activity guide will be distributed to each student and parent.
