Drawing Two Syllabus

Introduction:

This course is open to all 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who have been approved through the submission/presentation of a developing portfolio. Student who take this course are expected to produce art at an advanced level. To illustrate this, the students will present their work within a portfolio. Students will be expected to create works of art which illustrate knowledge of history as well as current events and current trends of art. Students will be expected to create works within a variety of media and compare a variety of solutions to each compositional/conceptual problem.

Critiques:

Students are expected to participate in regular individual and group critiques in which they will be expected to give reason for or against compositional and conceptual decisions made by themselves and their fellow classmates. Individual critiques are to be administered at a teacher-instigated and a student to student level. Students are expected to aid each other with the development of their compositions.

Evaluation of Student Work:

Student’s work will be evaluated on a consistent set of objectives.

Craftsmanship: Application of the medium was executed with advanced skill, and attention to detail. Objects remain clearly defined throughout the composition. Craftsmanship exceeds my expectations

Composition: Objects are placed in the composition in unusual, inventive ways that intrigue the viewer. Objects are shown at extreme angles or from unusual vantage points. Composition exceeds my expectations

Addressing of Theme: Images used relate to each other, creating a full understanding of the theme, delving into the heart of the theme and bringing about new ideas. Development of images to create a visual theme exceeds my expectations

Use of the Elements and Principles of Design: The work clearly demonstrates a broad range of intentions and purposes; it articulates multiples insights.

Use of Medium: Student fully explores the usage of mediums within a composition. Student takes great care to apply medium with purpose and reason.

Use of Art History: Student’s composition shows influence of art history studied in class or independently.

Plagiarism and Copyright:

All students’ work must be original from conception to images used. Drawing students are expected to work directly from observation, but may use reference images (not full compositions) in instances that require a subject that cannot be feasibly obtained by a student (i.e. dinosaur bones, decomposed body, image of political figure, etc.). I expect this of my students as their understanding of form, value, and especially texture will be greatly advanced without the handicap of working from a picture. Any image that a student works from within a 2D Design portfolio must be significantly altered (80% or more) in order for it to be submitted for a grade.

Any composition that is submitted which does not meet the above standards will not be considered for a grade.

CLASS PARTICIPATION

Be in your assigned seat, working on warm up BEFORE the bell rings. Students who walk in after the bell, but were waiting by the door will receive a tardy.

Come to class well prepared to complete the assignment for the day with materials and a positive attitude. Remember its ART, not laps around a gym. The classroom belongs to everyone so treat it with respect. This includes the tables, chairs, equipment, and other facilities. Follow instructions given in class, both oral and written. Group work, when instructed, is not an option.

DAILY PROGRESS

Your Sketchbook assignments must show development in design and

craftsmanship relative to new material introduced.

When working from one assignment to the next, focus on how your skills in art may be improved and work towards this goal. Your portfolio must remain neat and organized. Why create work to have it become damaged from a messy portfolio?

QUIZZES

Quizzes will be based on notes taken in class, presented in handouts and slide shows, as well as class discussion. Notes must be taken either on a laptop or in your sketchbook.

MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND TESTS

Complete the objectives for each assignment as presented by your teacher and/or as written in handouts you receive in class.

Show originality and neatness in your assignments: Who said you can’t go beyond the objectives and express yourself as a person and artist?

Turn in all completed assignments on their due dates. Late work will not be accepted. Once graded, work may be resubmitted once the teacher gives permission.

1st 6 Weeks: Focus – Drawing Through the Ages: How the masters of art, both historical and contemporary have honed their craft.

·  Students will review and demonstrate knowledge of the elements and principles of art.

·  Students will participate in establishing an understanding and usage of a variety of drawing techniques; Contour, Cross Contour, Gesture, Value, Linear Perspective

·  Students will study works by Renaissance artists in terms of drawing and composition.

·  Students will organize, justify, and define personal ideas through multiple preliminary sketches.

·  Students will create a composition illustrating an understanding of contour line within an observed form and/or environment.

·  Students will illustrate within a work(s) a mastery of atmospheric, positive/negative space and scale.

·  Students will experiment with a variety of solutions to illustrate a mastery of compositional theory.

·  Students will effectively evaluate and discuss formalism, emotionalism, and subject within personal and/or works of their peers.

·  Students will demonstrate care and craftsmanship in both the construction, application of media, and final presentation of work.

2nd 6 Weeks: Focus –Voice

·  Students will illustrate a mastery of gesture and rendering within complex forms/space.

·  Students will discuss the issues of voice as it pertains to modern culture and as it is perceived in the Visual Arts.

·  Students will master the use of value within a variety of media, techniques, and approaches.

·  Students will study works by Baroque artists in terms value, mood, setting, and portraiture.

·  Students will organize, justify, and define personal ideas through multiple preliminary sketches.

·  Students will analyze both historical and contemporary artists’ usage of contrast and mark making to create emotion, meaning, and mood, discussing how they will use these techniques within their own work of art.

·  Students will effectively evaluate and discuss advanced techniques and subject(s) within personal and/or works of their peers.

·  Students will demonstrate care and craftsmanship in both the construction, application of media, and final presentation of work.

3rd 6 Weeks: Focus – Storytellers

·  Students will illustrate understandable and navigable narratives.

·  Students will create environments within composition that address issues of place both natural and artificial.

·  Students will discuss the issues of place and narrative as it pertains to modern culture and create a work that incorporates the idea of art as a means of storytelling.

·  Students will master the use of color within a variety of media, techniques, and approaches.

·  Students will study works by Romantic/Realist artists in terms environment and narrative.

·  Students will organize, justify, and define personal ideas through multiple preliminary sketches.

·  Students will effectively evaluate and discuss advanced techniques and subject(s) within personal and/or works of their peers.

·  Students will demonstrate care and craftsmanship in both the construction, application of media, and final presentation of work.

4th 6 Weeks: Focus – Transitions

·  Students will create experimental drawings within the areas of collage, mixed media and non-traditional means of marking making.

·  Students will research and illustrate differences of “seeing”/perspective, from personal ideas and beliefs to ideas of abstraction.

·  Students will master the use of form within space focusing on foreshortening as a distortion and abstraction of reality.

·  Students will study movements of art such as Cubism, Surrealism, and Futurism in terms of subjectivity and abstraction.

·  Students will organize, justify, and define personal ideas through multiple preliminary sketches.

·  Students will effectively evaluate and discuss advanced techniques and subject(s) within personal and/or works of their peers.

·  Students will demonstrate care and craftsmanship in both the construction, application of media, and final presentation of work.

5th 6 weeks: Focus – Pathos

·  Students will focus on combining both objective subject matter and subjective themes in order to achieve a distinctive sense of pathos based in a real world environment.

·  Students will research and illustrate their response to a contemporary issue, inside or outside of their community.

·  Students will illustrate a mastery of conveyed ideas within a purposefully designed, student led composition.

·  Students will study movements of art such as Post-Impressionism, German Expressionism, Social Realism, and Pop Art in terms of social consciousness.

·  Students will organize, justify, and define personal ideas through multiple preliminary sketches.

·  Students will effectively evaluate and discuss advanced techniques and subject(s) within personal and/or works of their peers.

·  Students will demonstrate care and craftsmanship in both the construction, application of media, and final presentation of work.

6th 6 weeks: Focus – Art as Commodity

·  Students will focus on creating art for the commercial market.

·  Students will demonstrate the ability to discuss and illustrate one object or idea from multiple viewpoints in a small body of work (i.e. triptych).

·  Students will research and study a contemporary artist of their choosing to discuss in which way the artist has made their work marketable and relevant to its consumers; artists such as Shepard Fairey, Jeff Koons, Mel Chin, Barry McGee, and Gary Baseman.

·  Students will organize, justify, and define personal ideas through multiple preliminary sketches.

·  Students will effectively evaluate and discuss advanced techniques and subject(s) within personal and/or works of their peers.

·  Students will demonstrate care and craftsmanship in both the construction, application of media, and final presentation of work.

Classroom Procedures

To receive the maximum benefit from art instructions, all students must follow these procedures:

·  Be in your assigned seat with a pencil and other art supplies before the tardy bell rings, and begin working on your “Warm Up”.

·  Maintain silence during teacher and/or P.A. announcements.

·  Must have teacher pass or “Tardy Ticket” to get in class if late.

·  Check out materials at the beginning of class and return them in a CLEAN CONDITION at the end of class.

·  Be responsible for your own possessions and assignments

·  Write your first and last name, class, and period on the top, left hand corner on the back side of all assignments.

·  Clean up your own work area. This means the entire table. I don’t care if others sit there.

·  Remain in your assigned seat at the end of the period until dismissed by your teacher. If any student is out of their seat, all will remain until all are seated, checked out for cleaning duties, and dismissed by the teacher.

·  Students who need materials to complete an assignment at home may check out the materials at the end of class. All materials checked out must be returned the following morning before class begins. Students, who do not, will not be allowed to check out materials in the future.

·  Students in period one are expected to take down all chairs at their table.

·  Students in period eight are expected to put up all the chairs at their table.

Classroom Rules:

  1. No Food or Drinks allowed in the classroom. The only exception is bottled water with a screw-on top and spout. Food brought into the classroom will be collected and thrown away.
  1. No ELECTRONIC DEVICES may be used in class for non-academic purposes. This includes phones, games, headphones, beepers, etc. Music is played during certain times in class. A student may bring music of their own that is without obscenity to be considered for play.
  1. Vandalism of other’s and/or your own work is not allowed and is deemed cause for immediate referral to the vice principal and the school police official.
  1. All comments, vocal or physical, must be appropriate and considerate of others. Behavior that is not appropriate will be dealt with by the vice principal and school police official.
  1. All materials and facilities within the classroom must be treated with respect. Any person who damages or vandalizes classroom materials and/or facilities will be held financially responsible.
