Christmas traditions in England

/by Magdalena Paluch/

On December 24th British people decorate their Christmas Trees. This tradition was brought from Germany by king's George III's wife, Queen Charlotte. It has begun over 200 years ago in the royal court and since 150 years it is present in every British home.

Everybody knows that Christmas is a time of kissing under the mistletoe. However, few of them know that this tradition comes from Great Britain. The druids believed that mistletoe has fallen from the skies and thus lives on the trees. This way it was supposed to be a connection between the divine and down-to-earth things. The custom is that before kissing one should take a berry and give it to the person they are about to kiss. When the bunch runs out of berries, people run out of kisses.

Also, England, as every country, has unique dishes served during Christmas. The most important meal is an early dinner on Christmas Day. This included either a head of a wild boar or a roasted goose. Throughout the ages the goose has been replaced with a stuffed turkey, though. The bird is filled with chestnuts, roasted potatoes, Brussels sprouts or roasted parsley with orange skin.

Another custom is the pulling of Christmas crackers. The crackers look like big candy and pulling them is pure fun. After pulling a piece of paper they sparkle and burst with a little noise. What is left is a small gift, a printed joke and a paper crown.

The Boxing Day. Its name comes from the boxes people exchange. Of course, there are gifts inside. This tradition dates back to thirteenth century. Naturally, English people do sing Christmas carols. They tend to send Christmas cards as well.

Is easy to pull a cracker?

Xmas recipes

/by Zuzanna Chmielewska/ GINGERBREAD COOKIES

Ingredients

·  3 cups all-purpose flour

·  1 1⁄2 teaspoons baking powder

·  3⁄4 teaspoon baking soda

·  1⁄4 teaspoon salt

·  1 tablespoon ground ginger

·  1 3⁄4 teaspoons ground cinnamon

·  1⁄4 teaspoon ground cloves

·  6 tablespoons unsalted butter

·  3⁄4 cup dark brown sugar

·  1 large egg

·  1⁄2 cup molasses

·  2 teaspoons vanilla

Directions

1.  In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves until well blended.

2.  In a large bowl beat butter, brown sugar, and egg on medium speed until well blended.

3.  Add molasses, vanilla, and lemon zest and continue to mix until well blended.

4.  Gradually stir in dry ingredients until blended and smooth.

5.  Divide dough in half and wrap each half in plastic and let stand at room temperature for at least 2 hours or up to 8 hours.

6.  Preheat oven to 375 deg. Prepare baking sheets by lining with parchment paper.

  1. (Dough can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, but in this case it should be refrigerated. Return to room temp before using.) Preheat oven to 375°.

8.  Grease or line cookie sheets with parchment paper.

9.  Place 1 portion of the dough on a lightly floured surface.

10.  Sprinkle flour over dough and rolling pin.

11.  Roll dough to a scant 1/4-inch thick.

12.  Cut out cookies with desired cutter-- the ginger bread man is our favorite of course.

  1. Space cookies 1 1/2-inches apart.

14.  Bake 1 sheet at a time for 7-10 minutes (the lower time will give you softer cookies-- very good!).

15.  After cookies are cool you may decorate them any way you like.

16.  I usually brush them with a powdered sugar glaze when I am in a hurry, but they look wonderful decorated with Royal icing.

Merry Christmas Everyone /Shakin’ Steven’s song/

/by Stanisław Szutowicz/

Snow is fallin'
All around me
Children playin'
Having fun
It's the season
Love and understanding
Merry Christmas everyone

Time for parties
And celebrations
People dancin'
All night long
Time for presents
And exchanging kisses
Time for singing Christmas songs

We're gonna have a party tonight
I'm gonna find that girl
Underneath the mistletoe
We'll kiss by candle light

Room is waiting
Records playing
All the old songs
Love to give
Oh, I wish that
Everyday was Christmas
What a nice way
To spend the year

We're gonna have a party tonight
I'm gonna find that girl
Underneath the mistletoe
We'll kiss by candle light

Snow is fallin' (Snow is fallin')
All around me (All around me)
Children playin' (Children playin')
Having fun (Having fun)
It's the season
Love and understanding
Merry Christmas everyone
Oohh Merry Christmas everyone /x3/
