DOING AND TEACHING

A. INTRODUCTION: Luke 1:1-4, Acts 1:1-3

B. To write, Luke had to learn what Jesus did and taught.

C. Luke found out that Jesus didn't “Do”, without also teaching. He was not a silent example.

D. Jesus also did not “Teach” without doing. Not a hypocrite.

E. Therefore, Luke declared what Jesus did and taught.

Jesus being our example, we learn from Him and we learn from the Word of God:

1. The folly of doing and not teaching.

2. The folly of teaching and not doing.

3. The wisdom of doing and teaching.

I. DISCUSSION:

A. THE FOLLY (foolishness) OF DOING AND NOT TEACHING.

1. Consider our losses if Jesus had performed his mighty deeds without giving His “Words of Teaching”.

1) His sermons. Matt. 5, 6, 7 – discipleship, anxiety, devotion, humbleness, love, prayer.

2) His promises. John 14:1-3

3) His warnings. Luke 13:3 - I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish.

4) His commands. Mar 16:15-16 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned.

2. Consider yourself. (Influence)

1) Do your children have to wonder why you live the way you do? What a loss!

· Will they think that the Christian life is optional?

2) Can you give an answer for your behaviors? 1 Pet. 3:15.

3) Teach that others may teach. 2 Tim. 2:2.

· I learned about God through the teachings of others and continue to learn.

4) 1Co 1:21 - For seeing that in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom knew not God, it was God's good pleasure through the foolishness of the preaching to save them that believe.

- God’s plan involves teaching!

B. THE FOLLY OF TEACHING AND NOT DOING.

1. Do we realize the folly of the saying, "Do as I say and not as I do?"

1) Do we say, "Don't cuss," and then we cuss? Rom 2:21-24

2) Do speak of giving and then as in James 2:16 say, "be ye warmed and filled" while not providing the things that are needed?

3) Mat 28:19 - Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Do we say, "Amen" when sermons on the Great Commission are taught and yet one would be hard-pressed to find any evidence of our carrying it out?

4) Have we invited others to church and then failed to show up ourselves? Heb. 10:25

5) Do we claim to be Christian and yet ignore the will of the Father? Matt. 7:21-23

2. James 3:1-13 – Controlling the tongue. Show by deeds.

3. Matt. 15:9 – “But in vain do they worship me teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men.” Falseness

4. Matt. 23:1-3 – Teachings need deeds.

5. Acts 15:1-11; Gal. 2:11ff. – Teaching without deeds…

C. THE WISDOM OF DOING AND TEACHING

1. Doing and teaching is the Lord's way.

2. Ezra is an example of this. Ezra 7:10

3. Abraham would command his children after him. Gen. 18:17-19

4. Deut 6:3, 7 – Teach the Children

5. 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 4:1-5. Scripture makes us doers and preachers.

II. CONCLUSION:

1. Christianity is a taught religion. Teaching is absolutely mandatory. "Doing" without teaching will not do.

2. Teaching without doing is called hypocrisy.

3. We only follow our Lord's example when we do and teach.
