Discipline: Language and communication
! Observation: lesson applicable on two languages in parallel, at choice, if the subject chosen has common applications: e.g. romanian-french, romanian –italian, spanish-french etc. The example above goes for romanian –french, the romanian part being translated to english
Time: 2 hours
Level: IX grade (14- 15 years old)
Title: The Adjective - stylistic values
a) The Adjective
b) Stylistic values (epithet, comparison)
Objectives:
· Summarizing morphological knowledge (during the first hour)
· Distinguishing expressivity means (during the second hour)
· Understanding diversity of cultures and its representations through language
· Understanding the value that can be derived from having different cultural expressions
· Understanding of the diversity of the national heritage and the influence of different groups to modern Romanian/ French language
· Acquiring knowledge about other cultures through literary expression
Methods: Expressive reading, conversation, exercise
Means: working sheets, manual, text book, minidrawings
Type of activities: frontal, independent, group or pair work
Evaluation: Tests – subjective items, multiple choice items
Procedure:
I. The Adjective(first hour)
- Summarizing the VIII grade knowledge about the adjective (classification, syntactic functions etc.)
1. Write down two examples of adjectives:
· proper adjectives
· verbal adjectives ( participial forms)
2. Fill in the following cases with the appropriate number of flexionary forms of the adjectives:
Big/ grand good / bon happy/ heureux long/ long
Obedient/obeissant green/ vert tidy /propre merry/ joyeux
3. Make three sentences containing each an invariable adjective:

4. Analyze the adjectives from the following texts:
“From under the distant borders of the sky, from everywhere, lots of gloomy clouds, with bold and threatening forheads, appeared unexpectedly….” (C. Hogas)
“L`Arabe dans son coin, toujours accroupi, tient ses pieds entre ses mains.Des terrasses monte une odeur de café grille avec des bavardages animés de voix jeunes. Un remorqueur donne encore sa note grave et tendre.” (A. Camus)
5. Fill in the blanks with the appropriate adjectival form. Rewrite the sentences placing the adjectives before the nouns and draw conclusions concerning the place of the adjective in both languages:
The clouds……… (grey) will bring the rain.
Les nuages…..(gris) apportent la pluie.
I like people ……….(merry).
J`aime les hommes……(jovial)
The sunshine …….(silver) light the earth.
Les rayons…..(argenté) illuminent la terre.
6. Put the following nouns to the dative-genitive form, using also the definite article:
Silver sunshine/ rayon argenté
Grey autumn/ automne grise
Dim glass/ verre foncé
7. Write sentences in which the adjectives bad/ mauvais and right/juste to become nouns and adverbs.
The students are asked to solve the exercises either individually or in pairs
The observations are written on the blackboard
The mistakes are being corrected
The feed-back is assured
Homework –Write a composition of maximum 10 lines having as title “The intruder in my grandparents` orchard” using adjectives to all degrees of comparison.
II Stylistic values ( the second hour)
1. Group the adjectives from the following texts having as criterion the degree of comparison:
a) On the highest hill…../Sur la colline la plus haute…..
b) A very beautiful girl……/ Une très belle fille
c) The sun had been much more hardworking than me……/Le soleil a été beaucoup plus laborieux que moi….
Positive degree / Comparative degree / Superlative degree2 Write the forms of the following adjectives to the comparative degree:
happy, old, brave, beautiful/ heureux, vieux, brave, beau
3. Write the synonymous adjectives from the following expressions and state their degree of comparison:
as slippery as an eel
the squirrel ran more swiftly of all
this dog is the smallest one
en piteux état
une reaction bien humaine
avoir l`air éveillé
4. Underline the adjectives that have no comparison degree:
E.g: complete, dry, big, alive, main, pale, good, inferior, supreme, heavy, surprising, interesting
The same exercise for the French corresponding adjectives.
- The adjective has stylistic value so it is able to form figures of speech: epithet, comparison, metaphor, personification. Etc.
Epithet: putting next to each other a noun and an adjective
e.g.: bright blue sky/ ciel bleu et lumineux
white flower/ fleur blanche
etc
Obs.: In literary texts (prose or poems) the students are asked to identify the epithets.
Comparison: Joining together through a common element
E.g: as yellow as an onion/ jaune comme une ognion
as red as a rose/ rouge comme une rose
as white as a wall/ blanc comme le mur
Personification: giving human characteristics to objects, phenomena etc
E.g: The old forest sigh sadly/ La forêt vielle soupire avec tristesse
Underline the adjectives that have a stylistic value:
Here, the oaks and the haughty pine trees rise their heads towards the sky.
The sleepy badgers, the red furry marten, the witty squirrels…… they all appeared in front of him.
Au printemps, Tipasa est habitée par les dieux et les dieux parlent dans le soleil et l`odeur des absinthes, la mer cuirassée d`argent, le ciel bleu ecru, les ruines couvertes de fleurs et la lumière à gros bouillons dans les amas de pierre.
