ISSUE:

On-site removal of leaded paints.

background:

The ProCATS data shows a project where lead paint abatement was done and an expensive change order was issued to provide a thin coat of veneer plaster to walls which were damaged during the abatement. The veneer plaster to restore walls finish was not called for in then original scope of work. Regardless of procedure used for lead paint abatement, whether it's removal by hand tools, use of chemicals and heat, use of power-operated tools, vacuum abrasive blasting or high pressure fluid blasting, there's need to specify final finish for the abated walls.

recommendations/CONCLUSION:

This design alert is intended to serve as a reminder for the need to specify wall finishes where the lead paint has been abated.
