JOB TITLE / Laboratory Technician

Description of duties and responsibilities

1 Preparation and setting up of class experiments, demonstrations and equipment including new technology applications

2 Clearing and putting away experiment and demonstration equipment, ensuring safe disposal of all classroom materials after use.

3 Preparation of specimens and solutions for use during classes and maintenance of teaching aids/worksheets.

4 General maintenance of Laboratories and ancillary rooms in a clean and tidy condition including the responsibility for ensuring that Laboratories are left in a suitable state to facilitate general cleaning by cleaners.

5 Assist in the classroom with students and demonstrations, and assist with development work as required.

6 Set up computer and data – logging equipment

7 Undertake simple repairs and maintenance of equipment.

8 Processing orders for supplies, maintenance of stock records and general clerical tasks, e.g. filing, issuing/maintenance of books.

9 Where appropriate, shopping for the purchase of necessary items for experiments (e.g. foodstuffs).

10 Care of any Laboratory animals/insects/reptiles where appropriate.

11 Assist with safe handling, storage and transportation of chemicals in accordance with Health & Safety procedures and guidelines.

12 Take part in training as required including Health & Safety issues.

13 Use computer to update stock records and make notices/worksheets/labels.

Attributes / Job Requirements Essential / Job Requirements Desirable
Knowledge / Familiarity with basic scientific equipment, e.g. ammeters, chemistry equipment etc.
Good understanding of safe working practices and of Health & safety issues.
Skills & / Ability to work without supervision
Abilities / To construct simple items of equipment for classroom use.
To identify simple equipment faults of both an electrical and mechanical nature and to undertake minor repairs as appropriate, e.g. soldering, glass preparation. Also to undertake general maintenance of equipment.
To maintain appropriate working relationships with staff and students. Including confidentiality, flexibility.
To possess excellent communication skills
To be able to prioritise own workload in consultation with Senior Technician.
To work in a flexible and organised manner.
To undertake general clerical tasks, e.g. filing, stocktaking, processing and checking stock orders. General computer skills, e.g. Word Processing.
Ability to use spreadsheets and/or databases
To undertake additional training as required or necessary
Educational Achievements / Good standard of education – to include Maths and English and a Science subject First aid qualification
Experience / Previous proven experience of working within a science faculty within a school environment
