BY FAITH

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for…

Hebrews 11:1

Now faith is the essence

Of hope we desire;

The witness of glories not seen;

By claiming the presence

Of One who is higher,

Our prayer life is sure and serene.

The elders, as noted,

Obtained a report,

Revealed in the Scripture as good;

In what they promoted,

They lived as they taught,

Sustained by celestial food.

By faith we have insight

Regarding the times:

The ages that God has decreed;

Providing the foresight,

Including the crimes,

We know that are bound to proceed.

By faith Abel tendered

A blood sacrifice,

Much better than that of his kin;

Because it was rendered

From godly advice,

And spoke of the ransom for sin.

Poems of the Lord page 484

By faith also Enoch

Did not meet with death;

His body could nowhere be found;

He lived in an epoch

With Jared and Seth,

When longevity was renowned.

For this was his witness,

He walked with the Lord,

And then his translation occurred;

Attesting his fitness

Where records are stored,

Forever in God’s holy word.

For God has elected

We cannot please Him,

Without having faith in His Name;

As we are directed,

Though faith may be slim,

His love will reward every claim.

By faith also Noah,

Divinely forewarned

Of things not beforehand in view;

Became the bestower,

Though many had scorned,

Of that which would flourish anew.

By faith also Abram,

Obeying the call,

Went out to a place not revealed;

Though pausing at Aram,

His faith overall,

Rings out like a bell that has pealed.

Poems of the Lord page 485

In tents he abided

In land he was shown,

With Isaac and Jacob his heirs;

For thus he was guided

In what he would own,

When God would establish his prayers.

He looked for a city

Divinely prepared,

With solid foundations and sure;

Perfected completely,

With nothing impaired,

Where every indweller is pure.

By faith also Sarah

Gave birth to a son,

When she was past child-bearing years;

Becoming the bearer,

When decades had gone,

Of one so unique in his peers.

So there has amounted

From one faithful man,

And him who was reckoned as dead;

As many as counted,

As stars in their span,

Or sand by the seashore is spread.

These all died believing,

Not having received

The promises given before;

Yet always perceiving,

As faith has conceived,

They hoped for a far distant shore.

Poems of the Lord page 486

Declaring so plainly,

In saying such things,

Their homeland was not on the earth;

Confessing, not vainly,

As hope duly springs,

They look for a country of worth.

At Abraham’s testing;

The time he was tried;

He offered up Isaac his son;

A deed so arresting

To one by his side;

God called and the testing was done.

With faith still prevailing,

When Isaac was old,

His blessings he pledged on his seed;

Though eyesight was failing,

His heart was not cold;

The blessings in time did proceed.

By faith Joseph also,

When ending his days,

Gave orders concerning his bones;

For many days more so

Were set in his gaze;

A homeland with glorious tones.

By faith also Moses,

The time he was born,

Was hidden three months from the king;

The Scripture discloses

His birth was the dawn,

Of freedom the future would bring.

Poems of the Lord page 487

On reaching adulthood,

He would not be named

The son of the princess in court;

The pleasures he withstood,

And sin that defamed,

He chose to abandon as naught.

Esteeming the riches

Of Christ with reproach,

As greater than wealth can possess;

The favour in which is

The One we approach,

In whom is reward and success.

By faith he left Egypt,

Not fearing the wrath

Of Pharaoh and all of his host;

Who issued an edict

To cut off his path,

And lower his dignified post.

He kept the Passover;

The sprinkling of blood,

That none of the firstborn be slain;

And later, moreover,

The seas having stood,

They passed through as over a plain.

By faith they confounded

The town Jericho,

By marching around it for days;

When trumpets were sounded

From priests even so,

The walls tumbled down in a maze.

Poems of the Lord page 488

So Rahab the harlot,

Who guarded the spies,

When they were observing the land;

Was not of the target,

As Joshua’s prize,

Who led his victorious band.

And yet time would fail me

To tell you the more

Of heroes that faith has produced;

Their feats would entail me,

To further explore,

The exploits of courage induced.

Who turned back invaders;

Saw righteousness through;

Obtained precious promises there;

By Him who has made us,

Who carries the true,

And conquers the evil laid bare.

These saintly ancestors,

Have entered their rest,

And left us a record in time;

The Davids and Esthers,

With faith they possessed

Have blazoned a pathway sublime.

GOD’S GLORIES

To Him be glory and dominion for ever and ever.

Revelation 1:6

Our God is everywhere,

And we are in His care,

For as we claim His holy name,

His glory we can share.

He is omnipotent;

His strength is never spent;

Yet He became an open shame,

When to the Cross He went.

His knowledge is so vast,

Complete and not amassed;

He knows the thought of every sort,

However it is classed.

His justice is revealed,

And cannot be repealed,

The victory of Calvary

Declared the matter sealed.

His righteousness is pure,

And ever will endure,

In Christ alone its light is shown,

There is no other truer.

Eternally sublime,

Beyond the realm of time,

He visited while we were dead,

To cancel every crime.

Poems of the Lord page 490

His love can dwell within,

Because He conquered sin,

If we partake the bread He brake,

We shall His portion win.

His grace is full and free,

For all eternity,

It can descend and so extend,

Because of Calvary.

His mercy never wanes,

But goes to extra pains;

Withholding hurt, our just desert,

And cleansing all our stains.

His Name is Wonderful,

Without a moment’s lull,

As we adore Him more and more,

With joy unspeakable.

Distinctions

Behold, I show you a mystery.

1 Corinthians 15:51

The Scripture has distinctions,

That everyone should learn;

They keep us so we do not go

Astray at any turn;

Its teachings and predictions

Must tally with the whole;

We must define this study line,

And keep it as our goal.

Poems of the Lord page 491

There is a sad confusion

About the Christian church;

It did not dwell in Israel,

For such we vainly search;

It is a clear illusion

To correlate the two;

So earnest men should think again,

If this is what they do.

The Jewish state or nation

Has always been unique;

Its history has been to free

The Gentile or the Greek;

Its heritage, salvation,

Was settled in the past,

For prophecy could then foresee

The Saviour as He’s cast.

The Church is made of Gentiles;

Comprising also Jews;

It penetrates through all the states,

Proclaiming gospel news;

Apostles as they went miles,

Sent out by God’s command,

Evangelised the circumcised,

And men in every land.

When times have been completed,

And all the Church is called;

The Lord will come and take it home;

By which it is enthralled;

It never is depleted;

It cannot be curtailed;

The Lord will build until He’s filled

The temple He unveiled.

Poems of the Lord page 492

The nation will continue,

With restoration near;

It must go through a purging too;

A testing time severe;

So let this truth dwell in you,

If you should be perplexed;

The next event will represent

A well known Bible text.

The Church will have been taken

To its eternal rest;

Then Israel will know too well

Its long-awaited test;

This era will awaken

With promises of peace

But it will be a falsity,

As ravages increase.

The Church will be returning,

But first it must be tried;

The faithful work of judge or clerk,

That can’t be falsified;

Whatever is for burning

Will nowhere find a place,

But as sapphire endures a fire,

Rewards will be of grace.

Typology

Search the scriptures…John 5:39

Typology has been around

For many, many years;

It is indeed a fertile ground

Of teaching that appears.

Poems of the Lord page 493

It takes a type within the Old,

A certain life in view;

And then the antitype, behold,

Is patent in the New.

The Old is what the Scriptures are;

The Testament so-named;

The New does not go back as far

In pictures that are framed.

The life of Joseph can be seen

With biblical insight,

As patterning our Go-Between,

Who brought eternal light.

Rejected by his family,

And sold to foreign trade;

He countered female subtlety

By faith in which he stayed.

And through the testing all the while,

He stayed in measure true;

For thus his sojourn by the Nile

Had lessons carried through.

When Pharaoh could not find the key

Concerning certain dreams,

They called for Joseph hastily

To illustrate his themes.

Then he was made prime minister,

With all his expertise;

The plan he would administer,

And put his kin at ease.

Poems of the Lord page 494

The antitype is duly found,

With principles the same;

In Christ in whom our hope is bound,

Who went from death to fame.

The Lord’s Passion

…He showed Himself alive after His passion… Acts 1:3

As Jesus was nearing

The hour of His need,

With passion and tension it bore;

He spoke in the hearing

Of those who gave heed

To teachings of life evermore.

A woman came softly

And knelt at His feet;

The One she adored and revered;

The perfume was costly,

Her manner discreet,

With actions that make her endeared.

She poured out the perfume,

Anointing His head,

Befitting the death of a King;

The scent filled the whole room

With fragrance it spread;

Depicting the life it would bring.

Then came the occasion

Of Unleavened Bread;

For leaven is that which offends;

So this celebration

That pointed ahead,

Did Jesus observe with His friends.

Poems of the Lord page 495

When supper was ended,

The emblem remained

Of bread that depicted the feast;

The work so intended

To rescue the chained

And pardon the great and the least.

And then they departed

To Gethsemane,

The venue where Jesus would pray;

For so had been chartered

His path to the Tree,

To bear all our misdeeds away.

The others were sleeping

While He was in prayer,

Preparing Himself for the cup;

For left in His keeping

Was sin He would bear;

The full wrath of God He would sup.

Then came an intrusion;

An army arrayed

For battle with weapons of swords;

To counter confusion,

As might be displayed,

The Lord gave Himself to the cords.

The trials that followed,

Unlawfully staged

Were quickly thereafter convened;

With speech so unhallowed,

As methods engaged,

So justice was plain contravened.

Poems of the Lord page 496

And then before Pilate,

He finally stood,

With all His accusers around;

Yet He remained silent

As long as He should,

For hatred and sin did abound.

Then Pilate insisted

Before all the crowd,

I find nothing wrong in this man;

But they just persisted

With voices aloud;

Their lusting for blood overran.

Along with the urging

Of blasphemous smear,

And blows they had rained in their scorn,

He underwent scourging,

A whipping severe;

His back became bloody and torn.

He carried His cross bar

They laid on His back,

But He could not bear up the weight;
