Dances with Wolves – Culture Essay

“Dances with Wolves” is only a movie, but it shows many aspects of how native and non-native cultures are different. In the movie, John Dunbar’s attitude is different from many in his culture. He tries to learn and accept another culture to the point of joining it. Not everyone needs to go so far to create harmony between cultures, but Dunbar’s actions go a long way toward earning trust from the Sioux band he encounters.

Part 1: Explain what you have learned about how prejudice and misunderstanding generate hostility. You can use examples from the movie, from your own life, or from stories you’ve heard in the news or from others.

Part 2: As a person who has the power to change how others think (because we all do!) explain what you can do for yourself or to help others be more understanding and accepting of other cultures or opinions.

In a well-organized essay (think about what you’ve learned in your English classes), answer Part 1 and Part 2. Use the outline below to help organize your thoughts. We will go to the computer lab when available to give you an opportunity to type your essay.

Typed essays should be Times New Roman or Arial 12-point font (not bold or italicized) with 1-inch (2.54 cm) margins. Length is not as important as addressing all the points.
