Disconnecting / Reconnecting Feeding Pump Protocol

Steps for disconnection Feeding Pump:

Getting ready:

§ Turn off the pump

§ Wash your hands

§ Put on gloves

1) Crimp off G-Tube

Note: Do not pull on the G-Tube, it could be pulled out. This can result in stomach contents draining from the G-Tube stoma. If G-Tube becomes dislodged, cover stoma to prevent drainage and call RN immediately.

2) Disconnect the feeding line

3) Insert catheter pub into G-Tub opening

4) Put end of G-Tub into the holder on IV pole

5) Before moving client, secure the tubing

6) Dispose of gloves and wash your hands

Steps for reconnecting Feeding Pump:

Getting ready:

§ Wash your hands

§ Put on gloves

§ Gently un-tuck G-Tube

§ Look to see if tubing is leaking or if there are any changes in skin such as new redness or erosion. If either is present or there is something you do not understand, DO NOT PROCEED. Notify the RN. Note: Do not pull on the G-Tube, it could be pulled out. This can result in stomach contents draining from the G-Tube stoma. If G-Tube becomes dislodged, cover stoma to prevent drainage and call RN immediately.

1) Take end of feeding tubing out of the holder on the IV pole

2) Crimp off G-Tub

3) Remove plug, insert end of tubing into G-Tube

4) Place plug in the holder on the IV pole

5) Dispose of gloves and wash your hands

6) Be sure to turn pump back on.

This task has been demonstrated to me by nursing staff and I have completed a return demonstration and understand the correct procedures of connecting and disconnecting feeding tubes.
