We presently have exciting opportunities within our Engineering Design Service for Career Graded Trainee - Engineering Technicians. Our Engineering team are one of the many services that keep the authority running; making sure that Powys is a great place to work, live and visit.On a daily basis our Engineers and Technicians develop new improvement schemes and maintain the existing infrastructure across a wide range of areas such as roads, bridges, schools, housing and leisure. We simply couldn't function without them.

The successful individual will receive an opportunity to study towards a two year part time HNC in Civil Engineering. As well as receiving a fantastic grounding in the industry and an understanding of how we operate, this could be a springboard into a number of exciting opportunities in the future. As a member of the team you’d also have the opportunity to join our Institution of Civil Engineers Company Approved Training Scheme which will assist you with any aspirations towards achieving industry recognised Professional Qualifications.

As a Trainee Engineering Technician you'll enjoy a wide variety of tasks, working closely with more experienced professionals who will be only too happy to mentor and guide you through your formal qualification.

Should you successfully meet the requirements of the appointment over the 2 year career graded training period, you will take up the permanent position on full pay.

What will you be paid?

The Engineering Technician post has a pay scale presently ranging between £20,138 and £21,268 (grade 6, SCP21-23). During the initial two year training period the pay is proportional to this grade and is set out as follows:

1st year Career Graded Trainee - Engineering Technician: 80% of the normal salary for the position, based on the bottom point of the job evaluated scale, subject to National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage provisions (i.e. £16,110).

2nd year Career Graded Trainee - Engineering Technician: 90% of the normal salary for the position, based on the bottom point of the job evaluated, scale subject to National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage provisions (i.e. £18,124).

3rd year Engineering Technician (training period successfully completed): 100% of the normal salary for the position, based on the bottom point of the job evaluated scale, subject to National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage provisions (i.e. £20,138).

Subsequent Years: Annual increments to the top of grade (i.e. £21,268)

The job description that follows is for a fully qualified Engineering Technician. Applicants will not be expected to meet all the criteria listed until they have completed the 2 years training period.

Main Purpose of Post:

To support the delivery of civil/structural engineering projects, in order to maintain and improve the highway and property infrastructure.

To fully participate in the training process required for the role and to develop the skills required to successfully engage in a range of engineering design service functions.

Principal Responsibilities:

1.  Under the direction of a project lead, assist with and where appropriate take responsibility for inspections, designs, calculations, drawings, contract documentation, estimates, reports, surveys, for assigned projects and undertake such other duties as are allocated.

2.  Provide support using your knowledge and skills in the development of bespoke design solutions. Utilise your knowledge and skills in the development of bespoke engineering design solutions, during both the design period and on site works. To include identification of site problems & constraints, ecological & biodiversity considerations.

3.  Programme and prioritise your workload and support the development of scheme forward planning to meet delivery deadlines.

4.  To work with assigned Civil Engineering Apprentices, Trainees and/or Student Placements to assist with efficient project delivery.

5.  Support the Project Manager / Project Manager’s Representative upon any Contract(s). To include the measurement of works and preparation of valuations for interim and/or final accounts. Monitor contractors so works are carried out works in accordance with the contract and specification.

6.  Keep up-to-date with new construction policies and legislation.

7.  To liaise with other agencies, statutory undertakers and stakeholders on behalf of the County Council and other clients

8.  Participate in any training and development activities in order to maintain own professional development or to enhance competence within job role.

9.  Provide support for, attend and participate in public engagements and marketing strategies. Interact with members of the public and deal with enquiries and complaints relating to the work you are involved with.

10. Welsh Competency Level 1 - able to pronounce Welsh personal and place-names correctly, and can give/ respond to basic greetings on the telephone or in person.

11. To address health and safety policies and arrangements in a proactive manner to ensure that a high standard of safe working practices are maintained.

12. To actively support and implement the principles and practice of equality of opportunity as laid down in the Council’s Equal Opportunities Policy.

13. There is no DBS Check requirement for this position.
