Culture Makes a Difference

With each merger comes the need for the integration of organizational cultures. What is culture? Burke and Litwin identify organizational culture as "the way we do things around here."The culture audit focuses on three areas: workers, work processes, and the workplace, that is, the organization.
The table below gives examples of the areas to look at and the types of questions to ask for each of the three areas of focus during the audit. In addition, one should read the annual report, letters to stockholders, newsletters, Web pages, new articles, financial statements, business analysis statements, training materials, and any other documentation that can provide insight about how the organization operates.

You also will need to develop questions that provide insight into customer, management, and employee values and organizational taboos and sensitivities. You will want to look at how the organization perceives both its internal and external environments and how informal processes such as the rumor mill operate and affect the organization.
