Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Given an unknown word in a sentence, analyze the word form and context clues (position in sentence, cohesive markers, example clues, appositives, or other embedded definitions) in order to determine the meaning and usage of the new word.

As assessed by: a test on which the student is given a sentence that includes a vocabulary item previously unknown to the student and, without referring to a dictionary or similar source, derives the probable meaning by identifying its position in the sentence, cohesive markers, example clues, appositives, or other embedded definitions and paraphrases the sentence using a synonym of that word.

2. Write sentences and paragraphs, integrating words from the academic word list accurately and idiomatically.

As assessed by: a test on which students are given a series of related vocabulary items found on the academic word list and, given a question, write a paragraph-long answer that incorporates those words accurately and idiomatically, based on form, meaning, and usage.
