Biomedical Technology II – HB12

Course Description

Prerequisite: HB11 Biomedical Technology I

Recommended Prerequisite: Health Science I

This course focuses on genetics, neurobiology, sleep disorder and biological rhythms, bioethics, the evolution of medicine, and use of technology to study cellular and molecular biology. The curriculum was developed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Students will be required to utilize critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and advanced technology skills within the context of this course content. Projects, teamwork, and demonstrations serve as instructional strategies that reinforce the curriculum content. English language arts, writing as well as science are reinforced in this course. Biology is highly recommended as good preparation for this course.

Course Philosophy

The content of this course should be considered advanced biology and thus will require you to be prepared when you come into class. Without doing work outside of the class period, you cannot be successful. Great emphasis is placed on the use of technology through your student Chromebook. It will be imperative for every student to have a fully charged Chromebook daily. Students must be prepared for class with their Chromebook charged, consequences will include deduction of grade points on their assignment. Students may express a wide range of ethical views and discussions within the contents of this class, which provides an opportunity to discuss controversial topics with an emphasis on civil and respectful conversations.

Units of Study:

Unit 1: Exploring Bioethics

Unit 2: Using technology to Study Cellular and Molecular Biology

Unit 3: Human Genetic Variation

Unit 4: The Brain

Unit 5: Sleep, Sleep Disorders, and Biological Rhythms

Unit 6: Evolution and Medicine

Grading:

Projects (research project, essays) 25%

Activities (homework, class assignments and quizzes) 25%

Knowledge (tests, periodical reviews) 50%

Supplies:

Chromebook, pencils/pens, notebooks to organize handouts and note taking

Class Structure:

The above mentioned six units will be divided equally among the 3 six week grading periods. Students should exhibit organizational skills and time management. Discussion boards, Google classroom and unit research will be necessary components of this class.

Cellular Policy: PHS has a policy concerning electronics and those rules will be strictly enforced. During all assessments (tests, quizzes, finals, etc) electronics may be collected and secured until the end of the class period. Electronics may also be collected and secured at the discretion of the teacher during any given class period if used without teacher permission. If you have a PURPOSE for being here, you will be successful and discipline will not be an issue!

I am looking forward to teaching and meeting the challenges of this class. I am very glad each of you decided to continue your PHS health science career with this class and I am sure each of you will be excited to pursue all of the courses that are offered for future health care professionals. Finally, please remember that if you or your parents have ANY questions or concerns during the semester, please feel free to contact me or come see me!
