Course: Community Based Instruction (2nd & 3rd period)

Course Description: This course is designed to help prepare students with disabilities to become as independent as possible. Students have the opportunity to learn life skills in the classroom as well as in the community.

Big Ideas:

Units of study in areas related to daily living. This will include shopping, eating in restaurants, and accessing resources within the community. Units of study in areas related to money. This will include recognition, usage, checking accounts, budgeting, etc. Units of study in areas related to housing. This will include completing applications, reviewing rental properties, turning on utilities, etc.

Students will continue to be exposed to a variety of literature during a reading time. The books may be by teacher or student preferences.

Expectations/Goals of Course:

Students will be exposed to a variety of services and experiences within the community to gain new knowledge. The exposure to the experiences does not necessarily mean that the students will master the new knowledge.

1. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the different services in the community and the ability to access these services.

· Complete a shopping list in different settings

· Obtain books from the library

· Use street signs safely

· Mail letters, obtain mail, or use other available services at the post office

· Become aware of different career opportunities within the community

· Be able to use different recreational/leisure spots

· Use/start a savings/checking account, be able to access it, and become familiar with other services at a bank (optional)

· Understanding of health care facilities, services provided, and how to use those services

· Weekly or biweekly work at a job site, if age appropriate

· Reading fliers/sales ads

· Others

2. Vocational Tasks

· Multiple vocational/work tasks in the classroom to gain job skills

· Career explorations of sites within the community

· Volunteering in needed areas within the community

Grading: All grades, including papers, homework, quizzes, tests and presentations will be graded on a point scale. There will be a few opportunities for extra points to be earned throughout the semester.

· Thursdays – *CBI (CBI for Mrs. Price’s students. Students each attend once weekly outings)

· Thursdays – *Cooking/food or drink preparation for Mrs. Watkin’s students

· Fridays – *Skills for Mrs. Watkins students

· Fridays – *Cooking/food or drink preparation for Mrs. Price’s students

Required Materials: notebook, paper, pencil, and calculator

Classroom Rules and Procedures:

Classroom Rules:

1) Bring needed supplies daily

2) Be respectful

3) Use your time wisely

4) Follow directions

5) Stay on task/complete assigned tasks

Consequences:

1) A verbal warning is issued with a concrete explanation of what is expected.

2) A loss of all or partial break is issued with a concrete explanation of what is expected.

3) A loss of break and lunch detention is issued with a concrete explanation of what is expected.

4) Up to one day of room restriction is issued with a concrete explanation of what is expected.

5) Continuation of any inappropriate behavior will result in an office referral. Consultation will be needed between the teacher and administration for determination of further punishment (e.g. ISD days, multiple room restriction days, etc).

Classroom Participation/Attendance Policy: Consistent attendance is a must. The ability to learn, maintain, and generalize the information depends on daily attendance.

Other Comments: Occasionally, the CBI outing must be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Some CBI outings will require the student to bring in money. If this causes a problem, please contact us as soon as possible.
